And the hits keep on comin'.
First the D'Agostino shutters, set to become a CVS. Next, two independent Montague restaurants close their doors. Now, word has it, that another chain is coming to the Heights - not as nefarious sounding as a Quiznos or Chili's, but a chain/franchise operation nonetheless: Ben & Jerry's.
The Vermont pair tried to make it on Court Street in Cobble Hill a while back. And, now it looks like they'll be re-emerging on Atlantic Avenue.
All Gothamist can say is: We miss Peter's Ice Cream! Can't remember the last time we had some of Pete's homemade Grapenut Ice Cream...And, can't imagine that B&J's Chubby Hubby will really fill the void.

When the Court Street B&J's closed, it became a McThai Lenongrass Grill, which seems to be thrivingish. From medi-chain to mini-chain is an improvement, I suppose...
Chains chains chains! Chains of fools!
And the chocolate sauce that Peter's used to have. I miss that place. And no, some B&J's with cutesy ice-cream names won't fill the void.
I miss Peter's too, but what I really miss is having so few choices. Montague Street has HD, Cobble Hill has Uncle Louie G's, Court Street has some pathetic soft serve....and that's it except for a few lame delis/pizzerias that have Italian ice.
Welcome back to B&J.
Fishs Eddy? Property Values? What are you, a rich, white Republican?
Just kidding. I also love the chains. Not being born and raised in NYC, "nostalgia" to me actually *is* Chili's. (Sigh, like that one time, after prom, when all of us shared a Bloomin' Onion and secretly poured wine coolers into our pop glasses... that was awesome.)
I miss Pete's terribly as well. But a B&J kicks HD's ass any day, so welcome. It's probably the closest we'll get to Pete's.
But PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD AND EVERYTHING THAT IS HOLY NOT A CHILI'S! A Chipolite, maybe. But please, Mother Mother Make It Stop!
PS: Note to Happy... Have you ever *been* to the Banana Republic on Montague? Dude, head over to 5th and 17th, please, for your own sake. This is part of the problem with Montague, not only do we get the chains, we get the dregs of the chains. Why doesn't BR just come clean and call it an outlet?
Hey, I like B&J's. As monstrous, faceless, evil superchains go it's pretty harmless. And their coming to Montague isn't going to stop me from walking down to the pier to get me some real fantastic ice cream at the Factory. As for Quiznos, I'd actually prefer it to the profoundly subpar Subway Montague has. The restaurants on Montague may be independent--but I don't shed any tears for most of them. They're overpriced, overrated, and bland. I wish Brooklyn Heights had even a halfway decent music store. To buy a cd or a dvd, you have to go far afield. It's a pain.
Think of Brooklyn Heights as a well-maintained hotel with nice rooms but a mediocre restaurant, no nightclub and a gift shop where you can only get the basics. In other words, without Manhattan & the subway, people would have no reason to live there.
Teddy's dead right. The large apartments, beautiful homes, harbor views, nice playgrounds, friendly people... nope, there's no reason to live here. That's why places cost as much here as they do on the UWS.
In other words... um, no.
It didn't come out right, what I mean is some people keep complaining about what the "Heights" lacks. Those are generally the people who would be better off in Manhattan. I've lived in Brooklyn Heights all of my life but without Manhattan where most people work, eat, shop & play, all of the great attributes of Brooklyn Heights would not mean much to most people. Personally, I don't want to live in a "destination" neighborhood, I prefer quiet streets when I come home.
"The Vermont pair"? The actual Ben and Jerry sold their enviro-bovine-conscious company a year or so ago, hence the move for world domination...
