Error Ends Mets Homestand with Loss

In the final game of their 12 game homestand, the Mets lost to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim 4-3 and finished the homestand 6-6. Coming out .500 isn't horrible for the Mets, but for a team that plays significantly better at record at home than on the road - 22-15 vs. 10-16 - not doing better is not acceptable.

Yesterday's loss came after a thrilling victory on Saturday night which saw an inside the park home run by Marlon Anderson and a game winning three-run homer by Cliff Floyd. The series against the Angels was a litmus test for the Mets as they could test themselves against one of the better teams in the American League.

Pedro Martinez, who has pitched well for the Mets, didn't have his best game this season, but the game was lost in the 9th inning. David Wright's 11th error of the season proved costly and allowed the winning run to score with two outs. While Martinez helped his own cause and got his first RBI since 1996, Mike Piazza was of little help after being thrown out in the 1st inning.

The Mets head out to the West Coast for three games against the A's and the Mariners before playing the Phillies and the Yankees next week. With any luck they can win half of those games.
