NBA Finals: Nobody's Watching, But They Should Be

2005_06_shorry.jpgWhile examining your weekend options, it's worth a mention that Game 2 of the NBA Finals is Sunday night at 9pm. If you haven't been to your local sports bar lately, it's a great excuse to pound some beer and wings with your buddies on a school night.

The Spurs and Pistons kicked off The Finals last night, but the ratings for these supposedly "boring" teams were so low that a rerun of CSI actually drew more viewers. This is a shame, as the NY Times notes that both squads play great team basketball that flies in the face of SportsCenter highlights and actually resembles NCAA hoops.

San Antonio won last night 84-69 (it even looks like a college score) largely due to the heroics of last summer's gold medal winner Manu Ginobili. The Argentinian has a wild and "herky jerk" style of play that's a blast to watch, mostly because he usually looks like the Tasmanian devil. Hair flies, limbs are contorted, and people smack him in the face...it's great! San Antonio also has perennial title winner Robert Horry (pictured), a guy whose uncanny timing for huge game-changing shots is almost as interesting as the fact that he looks like Will Smith's twin brother. This got especially complex last night...when Will Smith was actually the pregame entertainment.

So, in sum - NBA hoops are more fun to watch than you think! Join Gothamist at our corner pub this weekend, and you'll see.

Well, the league should make it easier for moribund teams (like the Knicks, in the country's biggest market) to improve, instead of spending years near the bottom. The Knicks are paralyzed because of the spending limit. I'd watch if the Knicks were involved.

You can get better quickly in baseball. Look at Arizona.

That's not to excuse the Dolans and Isiah. Phoenix improved with imaginative deals.

kevin, the knicks only have themselves to blame for their salary woes.

and tom, you got it all wrong. it was will smith playing and horry doing the opening.

If the Knicks all of a sudden became great, you'd have fans in every other market (like me) complaining that the league is too biased towards big-market teams. And if you don't like the NBA, where Detroit is currently at the top and New York is at the bottom, then you'd better be prepared to chastiste MLB as well, where the market's teams are reversed in position. The Yankees have sure enjoyed not sharing the wealth, and I would bet good money that the Knicks win a championship before the Tigers.

The Knicks??? WHO CARES!!! The Spurs are where it's at!!! I've fully been watching from the beginning... And thanks for posting a photo of Robert Horry, he's super dreamy!

Definitely, MLB's structure should be looked at. There are plenty of teams that haven't been good in years like the Pirates or Royals. But there are plenty of clubs like this years' Mets and Yanks that seem to be spending their money foolishly.

>>>The Knicks??? WHO CARES!!! The Spurs are where it's at!!!

They play in San Antonio. I root for local clubs, even if their superstar resembles an overpaid rap/movie star.

I would root for the Kicks if I was from here, but I'm from San Antonio, so I have the TX pride thing. Don't you like to root for your hometown??

Well, as long as you're from San Antonio!

Any good detroit friendly sports bars in manhattan? i want to watch this game with my peers.

Hey, Gothamist!

You've shaken my trust with that pub selection. I don't know if you were kidding, but never having been there before, I took you seriously. I hate the sports bars in my neighborhood and figured I'd try something new. When we got there the place was empty (a good thing, usually, but not during the finals) and all ten television sets were tuned to Family Guy (also a good thing, usually, but not during the finals). We ended up watching the drubbing at some craphole on Bleecker.

BOO!

¨he looks like Will Smith's twin brother¨? wtf! racist?

Daver,

That comment is hypersensitive and reactionary. At one point or another, everyone from ESPN's Bill Simmons to the Spurs' Brent Barry to announcer Al Michaels have all commented on the uncanny similarity between Horry and Smith. There's nothing any more racist about that than saying that you resemble, say, Napoleon Dynamite.
