Yanks Lose Again

What now? The Yankees started the season 11-19, recovered by winning 16 out of 18 and have now dropped eight of nine with a 4-3 loss to the Brewers on Monday. Stop the ride Gothamist wants to get off.

Having lost five of six on their current road trip, the Yankees needed a win Monday and turned to their sixteen million dollar man, Randy Johnson. Once again, Johnson was not up to the task, putting the Yankees in a 3-0 hole and then giving up the lead after they had rallied to tie the game. Johnson came to New York advertised as the last piece of the puzzle for a championship squad. Instead, he has been another under-achieving member of a team that seems destined for mediocrity.

Pitching wasn’t the only problem for the Yankees on Monday night; their hitting failed them in key spots as well. With two on and one out in the fourth, Randy Johnson and Derek Jeter struck out. After loading the bases with no outs in the fifth, Jorge Posada struck out before Jason Giambi grounded into a double play. The Yankees got the tying run to second base with no outs in the ninth, but couldn’t score.

The Yankees still have five games left on this road trip to oblivion and they don’t get easier. Two more tilts with the Brewers before three games against the St. Louis Cardinals, the team with the best record in the National League.
