MTV Movie Awards

"Sweet!" As if conquering the legislature wasn't enough, Napoleon Dynamite won Best Movie and the film's star, Jon Heder, won for both Best Musical Performance and Male Breakthrough Performance (must have been his awesome bo-staff skills....or perhaps, because it was a Paramount/MTV Films movie) at the MTV Movie Awards, scheduled to air Thursday night. Hosted by Jimmy Fallon, the MTV Awards had, as usual, a mix of amusing and disappointing wins:
Best Female Performance: Lindsay Lohan’s Mean Girls performance beat out Uma Thurman’s bride.
Best Male Performance: The Aviator’s Leonardo Dicaprio won over Ray’s Jamie Foxx and Hitch’s Will Smith.
Best Action Sequence: In what seems like audiences expressing a subtle distaste for the west coast, The Day After Tomorrow’s "Destruction of Los Angeles" won, beating Spiderman's New York "Subway Battle."

Best Onscreen Team: Lindsay Lohan, Rachel McAdams and the Mean Girls crew beat not only Harold and Kumar’s John Cho & Kal Penn but Anchorman’s Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and the rest of the San Diego News Team as well. We're not too surprised - at the 2004 Awards, Adam Sandler & Drew Barrymore won for 50 First Dates.
Best Comedic Performance: Dustin Hoffman in Meet the Fockers. Really, did anyone honestly find Dustman that funny?

The show also included a tribute to The Breakfast Club. Yellowcard performed a cover of the movie's signature song, "Don't You Forget About Me" to honor the film’s 20+ year contribution to pop culture and the night’s notable guests - co-stars Molly Ringwald, Ally Sheedy, Paul Gleason, and Anthony Michael Hall.

And wait, you didn’t seriously think the TomKat National Publicity Tour would skip a cable movie awards show? MTV reports that Tom Cruise arrived on motorcycle with Katie Holmes, who later presented him with an inaugural Generation Award with all the winks,hug, and giddy gestures of an Oprah performance. We’re glad MTV recapped the awards before it airs so that we know to have our TIVO fast-forward such moments. Eminem, who performed onstage with scantily clad puppets, was also up to the “same old tricks” of attacking teen queens, specifically by asking Lindsay Lohan a seemingly valid question: “what are you going to remake next, 'Glitter'?"

The movies seem so old and the awards show so dated. Are people still pumped over Napoleon Dynamite? That was 10 months ago. Is everyone still talking about the Election results too?

I'm glad Napolean Dynamite won. And I agree with the choice of the best fight scene (won't reveal it here).

And the Cruise/Holmes thing just gives me a big headache. Why don't they go out and buy some self-assurance and dignity.
