White Hot Wines

from www.robpercy.co.ukSummer crept up on us this year - one day 40 degrees and rain, next a sweltering 87 degrees. Ok, maybe sweltering is a little dramatic, but after trekking 30 minutes across town to the 6 train, down the never-ending stairs and waiting “patiently” for the train to come – all we wanted was a cold refreshing beverage (or three). So we made a little detour to the wine store.

Summertime is a great time to explore the world of white wines. They are cool, crisp and bursting with flavor - the perfect drink to cool off a hot summer night. Whether you love luscious tropical fruits or crisp citrus flavors – have we got a wine for you…

Here are Gothamist’s top picks for refreshing summer wines:

Riesling
You can’t help but think of summer when sipping a Riesling. They are refreshing, lively and bursting with fresh peach and lime notes. Rieslings can have a touch of sweetness or be dry – try them both. And if you want to go all out, pair the Riesling with pork ribs or BBQ, the wine balances the spice of the meat and takes it to a whole new level.
Trimbach 2002 Riesling, $14

Sauvignon Blanc

Sauvignon Blancs are light, crisp and simple – the perfect combination for a summertime wine. Pass on the Chardonnay, as they tend to be a little too heavy when the weather heats up. Sauvignon Blancs have that great acidity and vibrant citrus notes to wake up the taste buds and cool you down.
2003 Labaille, Thomas Sancerre, Chavignol $18

Viognier
If you are not familiar with this lesser known wine (typically) from the Rhone region of France – than it’s time to meet your new best friend. This white wine is unique, approachable and loaded with tropical fruit, peaches and apricots.
Jewel Viognier 2004, $8

Also check out the Roses from the South of France. They are dry, racy and go very well with spicy summertime favorites. Gothamist loves them paired with Moroccan food.

We hope summertime is here to stay. The flip flops are out, the picnic basket is packed and we’ve been doing push-ups to fight our way to a prime spot for the Bryant Park movies. Ah, summer in the city.

Suggest also: "Les Rials" made from the archaic "Loin de l'Oeil" grape. Outstandingly crisp and refreshing, a little on the sweet side. And around $8 to the bottle. Reviewed here (scroll down): http://www.krestonwines.com/former_web_wines_of_the_week.htm

I totally agree with your comments re: Viognier.
Another great Viognier is made by Miner Family. Total yum.

If you like White Rhone varietal blends, then another fave of mine is Joseph Phelps Pasiche (translation: a little bit of everything). Good all by itself, but also pretty food friendly.

A Votre Sante!

Sooz, good call on the Phelps Pasiche. It's definitely worth trying.

Don't forget Albariño from Northwest Spain (Galicia), impossible not to like it.
