This Week's Music Picks

MIA We're anxious to see if M.I.A.'s live show has improved since her last (and only) N.Y.C. show at Knitting Factory in February. Then again, we don't really care. After releasing one of the year's hottest albums, it's hard for the grimey Sri Lankan-born rapper to do any wrong. Diplo mans the decks Tuesday and Wednesday night at S.O.B.'s. You can also hear Diplo DJing at Rothko Tuesday night (after the M.I.A. show), and they'll both be back to play Summerstage on August 7th.

Spoon One of indie rock's best has returned with another one of our favorite albums of 2005. "What makes Gimme Fiction such a pleasant surprise is not, therefore, how good it is in comparison to rest of Spoon's output, but how it goes about being so good" (-Tiny Mix Tapes). "Spoon's intrinsic elements have never changed. Head-first, maximum R'n'B and tense, shuffling rhythms back Britt Daniel's unparalleled vocals and despite constant re-invention, Spoon remain, inimitably, Spoon" (-Pitchfork). Listen to the whole album. Catch Spoon at Webster Hall Wednesday and Thursday night. Spoon is also headlining the Siren Festival on July 16th.

And now the day by day...

New-wave-art-pop-punk or whatever, The Futureheads play a small, free show at Pianos before headlining with a full electric set at Webster Hall. Pitty Sing opens. Check out this e-card to hear Pitty Sing sing.

Thursday - 9th

Although we prefer to hear Keren Ann's hypnotic voice in a loungey venue like Joe's Pub, we can vouch for the fact that seeing her in Southpaw is almost as good. And (fortunately for her) considering the direction her career is going, (unfortunately for us) this may be your last chance to see her in a venue as small as Southpaw.

Motel Creeps will be the last band to ever play Luna Lounge tonight. The venue is looking for a new home in Williamsburg.

The NYC blogosphere was mostly unimpressed with the Dears' last show at Mercury Lounge, but what does the blogosphere know? The show is sold out. Shout Out Louds are opening, and our guess is they'll be headlining pretty soon. Check out some Shout Out Louds MP3's at Central Village.

Sunday - 12th

Not closed yet, CBGB hosts New York Hardcore legends Agnostic Front. (Maybe they would stay open if all their big names weren't limited to "legends.")

Rock the Boat. Rock the Boat Baby. The Giraffes and Local H are playing a Rocks Off Cruise.

"Last year's flag-wavers for this trend were the Fiery Furnaces, whose Blueberry Boat revived the untapped "A Quick One While He's Away" story-song format for a surprisingly divisive audience. Though the Furnaces don't seem willing to relinquish their leadership role-- what with stacks of new material all set to be released in the coming year-- the hot prospect on the scene just might be Architecture in Helsinki, an eight-member Australian outfit bursting with the same ecstatic impatience and pretentious-pop charm." (-Pitchfork) (@ Knitting Factory)

CBGB - Agnostic Front, Full Blown Chaos, Champion, Outbreak, Fearless Vampire Killers, Step 2 Far
Rocks Off Concert Cruises - The Giraffes, Local H

  • Next Monday (6/13) Seu Jorge (of "City of God" and "Life Aquatic" fame) will be at S.O.B.'s. I know that's not happening this week, which is what this post's all about, but the tickets are probably going to sell out soon.

  • Mike Viola can often be impressive. He has a Monday residency at the Living Room this month. I'll be headed there, just down the street after the Futureheads at Pianos.

  • Looking forward to the Dears in spite of the NYC bloggy disapproval. Was in Montreal this weekend though and saw no indication of a rockin' scene. Maybe it requires a bit of digging. The Arcade Fire are still their best export as of late, considering the Stills to now be a NY band. Besides the Godpseed collective, which is somewhat dormant at the moment.
