Exciting Times for Flushing

With a rain out of Friday night's game, the Mets played a doubleheader Sunday to finish up the three game series against the Giants. The Giants won the first game 6-3 behind the pitching and hitting of Brett Tomko. Tomko threw 7.2 innings and allowed only one run, but his biggest impact was at the plate. In the 6th inning, Tomko hit a bases clearing double with two outs off Kaz Ishii. The win snapped the Giants losing streak after 8 games.

In game two, it was a different story. Kris Benson shut down the Giants and the Mets added four home runs on their way to winning, 12-1. Like Tomko in the first game, Benson helped his own cause, picking up a double and an RBI on a bases loaded walk in the 4th inning. Two of the four home runs were by Cliff Floyd who has 14 on the season, putting him in a 5-way tie for second in the National League.

The Mets are sitting right in the middle of the NL East in third place, 1 game behind les Nationals. In fact, first and last place in the division are separated by only 1.5 games.

As if a doubleheader at Shea wasn't excitement enough for Flushing, US Open tickets go on sale today. While things like concessions are brutally expensive, Gothamist has always liked taking in a day session at the Open during the first week of play.
