This would of been a good week to go on vacation, and not just because yesterday was Memorial Day. Relatively speaking, there's not a lot of exciting shows this week (or maybe we're just tired). Take the week off and enjoy the Brazil-like weather we're finally having (ok, not quite Brazil).
Brazilian Girls play Irving Plaza Wednesday night. Not Brazilian. Not girls. (well, one girl). These local superstars have been rising quickly since the release of their debut album this year. "They got their start in a club, and it shows: This stuff is all laid-back groove, with the usual transcontinental chic, easy-going house beats, and multilingual flourishes. But the club they came gliding out of is situated in downtown Manhattan, where the vibe these days is pretty far from VIP-lounge martini toasts." (Pitchfork) If you miss this show, catch them at Summerstage on July 17th.
The Fab Faux (not really the Beatles) are another group of local (are they?) music superstars. "The Fab Faux are without a doubt the most musically satisfying Beatles tribute band on the scene today. Boasting the high visibility of TV star/musicians Will Lee from The Late Show with David Letterman and Jimmy Vivino from Late Night with Conan O'Brien; five strong lead vocalists (including Rich Pagano, Frank Agnello, Jack Petruzzelli) and a commitment to the accurate reproduction of the Beatles' repertoire, this is the band to see if you want to know what it might have been like had the Beatles toured behind their later albums." (Cavern Club). The Fab Faux are at Bowery Ballroom Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday night. Find out more about their live show at PopMatters.
