Upcoming
Is that the sun that woke us up this morning? It won't last for long so enjoy it while you can. It's the unofficial start to summer this long weekend, and unless you're one of those people who uses the word "summer" as a verb, then you're sticking around the city. Hopefully you get to leave the office a little early though...
FILM: The LES Film Festival 2005 is free and it's this weekend! Starting tonight at 6pm you can soak up some LES culture with carnivals, crafts and cabaret. And other things not beginning with the letter "c", such as: live music, theater, and dance performances. There is, of course, also film. Saturday's all-day-movie-buttnumbathon will be downstairs in the Cabaret space at Theater for The New City [1st Ave between 9th and 10th Streets]. This year's program features Jim Jarmusch's Coffee and Cigarettes (2004), a revival of Richard Crawford's Captain Milkshake (1969), short docs, features, and clever animations by local filmmakers and organizations.
EVENT: People really do love their bikes in this city. Tomorrow peddle over to Bike Fetish Day. From Noon to 6 at the City Reliquary in Williamsburg [Havemeyer Street btwn Grand & Hope Streets]. There will be live music, a wheelie contest and other games like Police Freeze Tag and Pin the Mustache on the Rider. And guess what else...more bike blender smoothies! Be sure to drink one before the Bike Parade at 6.
COMEDY: Tonight at the Magnet Theater [254 W 29th St] check out Son of Here Be Monsters. Music by host Chris Mills, Laura Cantrell, and Seamus Blake, and featuring comics Demetri Martin, Slovin & Allen & more. The show starts at 9:30pm and only costs $5.
ART: Gil Jawetz has a small show of oil paintings on exhibit through July. His paintings are of pets, and you can get a little preview of the critters here. That floating head to the left is Clancy.
The show runs from May 21-July 29 at Slope Cellars in Park Slope. The address is [436 7th Avenue, between 14th and 15th Streets]
MUSIC: Since it's all right here for you we'll just leave you with that link and suggest the following. Tonight, Rilo Kiley isn't sold out yet. Scratch that, it's now sold out. Atlanta's sweethearts Snowden play Mercury Lounge at 11pm. Rev Billy's also having a party tonight at 7:30pm, St. Mark's Church [10th St and 2nd Ave]. We stumbled in to one of these fairly recently, it's defintely worth checking out. This show will help raise money for the legal defense of Critical Mass and bicyclists arrested by NYPD since last Fall. There will be a re-enactment of the night of April 27th, when cyclists threw their bikes over the St. Mark's fence and accepted Sanctuary from Rev. Frank Morales and Deacon Jorge Diaz.
Enjoy the extended weekend!
