NY Times Celebrates the Chrysler Building's Birthday

When Gothamist saw this photograph by Scott Jones for the NY Times, we immediately wondered if we could have Dr. Charles Weiss as our dentist ("Will our health plan cover it?"). We imagine that many other New Yorkers (and non) probably thought the same time, flooding various dental plans' hotlines and websites. Imagine: Dazzling skyline while your teeth get dazzled. The NY Times Home section is all about the Chrysler Building to honor its 75th birthday, which has given us enough to daydream about for the rest of the Memorial Day Weekend; all the articles give us a sense of how beloved the building is in many ways, and the audio slideshow with Alexandros Washburn's talking about his experience of working there is awesome (from the subway to the stairs to the lobby, and so on).

New York City loves you, William Van Alen.

This may be the best thing I have ever seen in the New York Times. I love the Chrysler Building and all of the stories behind it.

any idea what happened to www.chryslerbuilding.org? It was a great site all about my favourite building, but seems to have disapeared.

My dentist shares an office with Weiss - it IS awesome and I highly recommend doing it! I literally lay there getting my teeth cleaned with my feet at one of the triangle windows...which was open. While I was there, I kid you not, a lone red balloon floated by the window. My dentist (I call him Dr. K, he has a long last name I can't spell) wasn't that expensive, I don't have coverage so I have to pay anyway. Cleaning, exam, etc. was like $120.

for some abstract Chrystler related art, check out Mathew Barney's Cremaster 3, from the Cremaster Cycle. Saw it during the Gug run, wowy...

It's a truly magnificent building and stands for everything New Yorkers love about the city. It's never afraid to stand out on it's own and shine, it stood up to critics pans for years until it became pretty much universally loved and it has it's own style that it never ever apologizes for. We are lucky to have it.

I love the fact that those triangular windows open inwards on hinges. Fresh air in an office building is such a rare commodity these days. The design people at the LMDC should be forced to stand on 42nd St. and stare upwards at the Chrysler Building for 24 hours straight. Perhaps a little inspiration about lasting glorious architecture might be bestowed upon them.
