Need to Go Basis

2005_05_needtogo.jpgArthur Frommer and the pharmaceutical company Novartis have teamed up to give Americans the Where to Stop & Where to Go of places to travel and places there where you can go to the bathroom, and one of the cities mentioned at length is New York City. Novartis makes a drug for OAB, which stands for Overactive Active Bladder (apparently 33 million Americans suffer from it!), and when you go to the site where you can order the guide, you fill out a survey that asks you whether you urinate "8 or more times over a 24-hour period (frequent urination)." (Gothamist became slightly freaked out when we took the survey, but then realized our goals of trying to drink 8-10 glasses of water a day also causes the frequent urination.) And you can print out a "I Need to Go Now" card (PDF) for you to flash storeowners, but we doubt that showing this card at a fancy boutique will get you anywhere.

The watering holes (ha! we crack ourself up!) mentioned include restrooms at the Time Warner Center, Toys R Us in Times Square, the NY Public Library, and various department stores and hotels. Gothamist would also like to recommend any number of Starbucks and Barnes & Noble locations, even though the quality of the bathrooms varies greatly. And add you own has a list of bathrooms in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Plus, Gothamist on the Times Square subway bathrooms, an unscientific survey of handwashing after going to the bathroom, and all of our other bathroom related posts.

Humbug.

This is New York. If I want to free willy and there are no restaurants or other places with bathrooms open willing to accept me, then world is my urinal.

Unless we can set up public paid bathrooms that the British enjoy.

This sort of complied bathroom info would have been really good when I was younger and working as a bike messenger.

I think NovArts is just trying to drum up business with the claim that 8 pees makes you frequent urinator. I pee at least 8 times a day and don't want to be burdened with this label. In any case, I think Art Frommer kicks Fodor's ass. Other than the frequent urinator color coded warning system Art Frommer has never steered me wrong.

There are actually more questions on the survey, like "do you leak" and stuff...I highly recommend you take it!

last night i hit the old navy on bway - thank god otherwise it would have been a nasty ride home!!

Thanks for pissing on nyc kojak. I'm guessing I can thank you and yours for the Nassau G station's remarkable urinal cake odor?

I scored a 12 on the quiz. I may have an overactive bladder. I better get one of those cards.

i think the nassau station must have some backup, because it smells like shit at times.

just hope you don't see actual shit there like i did.

At the risk of giving away a great pee spot, I recommend Circuit City if you're near Union Square. Barnes and Noble is a classic choice too.

and why is the drug called enablex? if i have OAB, which they say i do, i want something called preventex.

haha - love your post tien. in all seriousness, I blame the patrons at the bar upstairs at the corner of nassau and manhattan. pissors each and every one.

Your welcome liberal server. That remarkable urinal cake odor on the Nassau G station platform is brought to you by yours truely.

Just think, when it gets to July and highs average over 90, the smell will overpower and refresh all within its wake.

Peeing eight times a day? Bah! This guy pooped 8 times in one day!

(Funny. Graphically descriptive. But safe for work.)

The Bloomingdale's in SoHo is always a good bet. There's already a book out there called "Places to Go" or something like that.

They forgot to add the Harlem Meer in Central Park. When its dark out its the perfect place to take a wizz and hear the rushing waterfall of urine. Hopefully the fish wont mind.

5/5 Stars

Crate & Barrel at Houston and Broadway is fantastic, though I heard it's not always open.

But I do loves me the aforementioned coin operated public loos. The most technologically advanced urination, ever.

I never go into Manhattan for any extended walking-around without taking my copy of Where to Go, a pretty comprehensive booklet listing all the places to take a whiz in the city. Very handy!

Why would you need a sign if you take the medication?

You can't be 82317 serious?!?
