Notes to Ferrer: Lose the 'stache, Get Out of the Race...

The hits keep coming for former Bronx Borough President Fernando Ferrer: City Councilman Charles Barrons says Ferrer should get out of the mayoral race and support Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia's Field mayoral bid. Barron says Ferrer is "free-falling and it's not going to stop." For his part, Ferrer says he has a right to run. And, Gothamist would imagine, a right to lose. But things aren't that cheery for Ferrer, not to mention the other Democratic challengers. There's a NY Times article about NYC Democrats hoping for a stronger candidate to emerge from somewhere else (Al Sharpton! Bill Clinton!), followed by an item on how mustaches aren't taken very seriously:

Indeed, in some political circles, Mr. Ferrer is being compared to Groucho Marx and some consultants are saying that the real lessons that he should absorb from the recent win of the clean-shaven Antonio Villaraigosa in Los Angeles are his grooming habits.
Where's the Queer Eye gang? And Gothamist would like to point out that our readers have thought Ferrer looks like Floyd the Barber. Even Donny Deutsch thinks Ferrer should lose the 'stache althoghter, but he did not comment about whether or not Ferrer should wear tight, nipply T-shirts. And to wrap-up our Ferrer news, he likes Donald Trump's plans for the World Trade center, even though he previously wanted to decentralize office space so terrorists wouldn't have a target.

The NY Times has great coverage of the mayoral race, as you would expect from the paper of record. On Saturday, there was a feature on Representative Anthony Weiner, the only candidate who doesn't spend 100% in NYC, as he shuttles between the Beltway and the city. And today, there's an article about how Mayor Bloomberg's private charitable giving counters some of the cuts his administration has made to cultural institutions - and what that means for his political allies. It's a fascinating look at how patronage (Bloomberg's philanthropy was well-known before ever taking office) and politics intersects when you have a billionaire mayor.

Councilman Barron should ask: Will the other boroughs support Virginia Fields?

I've no idea, but As reflected nationally, the Democrats all want the office, Slam each other or get their allies to, letting the incumbent slide in...

Based on Adverti$ing and the Democrats back stabbing each other: I bet Mayor Mike gets another term.

That picture looks like it should be followed by "If you see this man hovering around the playground, call the Crimestoppers Hotline at..."

Yes, in the interest of ideas being taken "seriously" in the political arena, I appreciate the extensive ink being expended on Ferrer's moustache. If he really wants to win the nomination, Ferrer should just cede the high road and go the ABBA route:
"Though I never thought that we could lose
There’s no regret
If I had to do the same again
I would, my friend, fernando"

Not just Floyd the Barber, but I think ferrer is also craftily tapping into many voters unconcious yearning for childhood by tapping into the look and sensibility of Mr. McFeely from Mr. Rogers neighborhood. The stache is so appalling that it is perversely appealing in an odd way. What better way to jar your friends out of their hipster bubble than to grow a selleck style moustache. I'm going to start today. At least ferrar is not calling for voters to steal and destroy copies of the NY Press like anti-free speech candidate anthony weiner or feverishly doling out the pork like pastry loving gifford miller.

Am I the only one who has noticed that Gothamist is subtly pro-Bloomberg and anti- Ferrer, Miller, Fields and Weiner? Search through the archives and see for yourself.

gee blike, why don't you gather a posse of drama queens on bikes about that. why is it that the guys that claim to be free speech advocates are always the first to reach for the pitchforks if they read/hear something contrary to their opinions.

No pitchforks were raised; I was just pointing out an observation. Everyone has a right to their opinion, and I was just pointing out that Gothamist obviously will be casting their votes for Bloomberg.

Plesae don't jump to conclusions--I have always posted about one thing and one thing only: the many reasons why Bloomberg must go. And there are many.

Yes, the pitchfork was raised. instead of focusing on the content of the article you are going after the messenger - the gothamist. that's fine if you think bloomberg must go, I don't think questioning the candidates facial hair is a partisan act. Maybe if you had been more vocal about the ill effects of ferrer's moustache he wouldn't find himself in the mess he's in at the moment.

The article is named "Notes to Ferrer: Lose the 'stache, Get Out of the Race..." Note the words "get out of the race." The second part of the article talked about the mayoral race, so I was on topic.

The first part of the article is about moustaches. But the last part specifically talks about the mayoral race, and Gothamist took a jab at Anthony Weiner, while they gushed about Bloomberg's "generosity." (Let us take note that NYC has record homelessness in 2005.) This type of gushing and praise of Bloomberg has been consistent, so I called a duck a duck.

But one thing is for sure--I'm all for moustache debate.
>:-{P

So, bloomberg is having a good day and the other candidates are struggling. I think that's an accurate reflection of how the campaigns are going. So, o.k. we'll agree that facial hair is fair game and that the creepy Donny Deutsch, with his nipply form fitting shirts is the last person that should be dispensing grooming advice. To be fair to the gothamist, I do recall a previous article which featured a photo of bloomberg standing in a swimming pool wearing a wet see-through polo shirt that featured mike's man breasts. I'm sure you weren't complaining on that day. Maybe Deutsch IS advising bloomberg.

Blike, having Ferrer out of the way strengthens the Democratic field, it doesn't weaken it. If Gothamist's seeming desire to have the best candidate take on the Mayor this fall is pro-Bloomberg, well then I'm right there with them.

See blike, go over to gawker.com. You'll see that the obscenely attractive jessica coen has posted another hard hitting election facial hair story. I think this race might well hing on this. You should forget about that bike rider activism and act like a real man. The most radical step you can take right now is to start growing a ferrer style moustache in support of your candidate. That pussy anthony weiner doesn't have the nads to sprout a real moustache.

maybe we'd have better politicians if appearance and hip fashion sense weren't such pressing issues.

I believe Freddy has what the kids call a "porn 'stache"? Sort of a mullet for your upper lip...
