Snack Dragon

photo by Laren SpirerIt's unclear why the Snack Dragon Taco Shack even has a listing on Menupages, because there's not much of a menu, per se. They sell four types of "California-Mexican/New York Style Tacos": Carne Asada, Chicken Verde, Quinoa Pilaf & Bean (vegetarian), and Carnitas. But if you're only going to do one thing -- do it well. And Snack Dragon does.

We stopped by one afternoon after a fantastic brunch at the Clinton Street Baking Company, and chatted with the gentleman working there that day. He had just started slow-cooking a pork shoulder, which would be available (as an addition to the menu) later that night. Intrigued, we stopped by later -- much, much later. Snack Dragon is open until about 4 a.m., ostensibly to provide much-needed sustenance to the late-night Alphabet City crowd. We had the opportunity to taste the pork tacos, well-seasoned, drizzled with tomatillo salsa, garnished with crispy cabbage and a smattering of onions (if we recall correctly -- this might have been after a few cockails), and wrapped in a blue corn tortilla. We were among the last served, and we walked home, happily snacking away.

Snack Dragon Taco Shack, 32 Avenue B at 3rd Street. No phone.
