This Week's Music Picks

We couldn't help but notice the abundance of talented white male rockers invading NYC this week. New and old and originating from various corners of the Earth, the white boys of rock n' roll are invading. Let us be your guide.

Last time they were here, they rocked NYC under the Brooklyn Bridge. The Irish international living rock n' roll legends, U2, are coming to a stadium near you. Tuesday and Wednesday at Continental Airlines Arena. Saturday at Madison Square Garden. And if you're an early riser, watch U2's performance on Good Morning America Friday morning @ 7 AM. Kings of Leon open the shows.

Gang of Four Bands full of dancing, rocking white boys like the Bravery, Kasabian, and Hot Hot Heat can thank Gang of Four for paving the dance-rock way some twenty-five years ago. Their classic album Entertainment! has been reissued, and after a twenty year vacation, Gang of Four is back. You can catch them at Irving Plaza Tuesday and Wednesday night (both sold out), and at a recently added third after show show at Tribeca Grand Hotel Tuesday night. The Bravery are at Irving Plaza on Monday and Warsaw in Brooklyn on Tuesday. Kasabian play Bowery Ballroom on Monday and Tuesday. Hot Hot Heat are at Webster Hall on Friday.

Pale white goth-rock pioneers Bauhaus recently reunited for a rare appearance at the Coachella Festival in California (review, pictures, & related: SPIN's Best of the Fest). Front-man Peter Murphy recently released his eighth solo album. Tickets are still available for his show at BB King's tonight. It's a nice gothic alternative for those unable to score a ticket to the second of two Nine Inch Nails shows at Hammerstein Ballroom.

Bright Eyes Liberal, young and white, Conor Oberst (aka Bright Eyes) caused quite a stir with his recent Jay Leno appearance. Saturday night Bright Eyes kicks off a five show run at Webster Hall with the Faint and Mars Black. Alternatively, Matt Pond PA plays a similar blend of Indie-emo-country-folk-pop. You can listen to Matt Pond PA at his/their website, and see him/them play Friday night at the Delancey.

Whether you attend the Bright Eyes/Faint show Saturday night or not, you'll still want to hit the $5.00 Loose Record sponsored afterparty at Pianos. "The evening will feature special guest DJ sets by The Faint before and after the bands, (until 4am). Playing first is Chicago's Terminal Bliss (12am) followed by U.K. art-punk peddlers Amusement Parks On Fire (1am)."

And now the day to day breakdown...

The Village Voice declared The Hold Steady the best band from Brooklyn. They said Separation Sunday is the best album of the year. Help the Hold Steady celebrate the album release tonight at Bowery Ballroom.

"But most people just stare, openmouthed or smiling, including a line of latecomers snaking up the staircase of the packed B.B. King Blues Club & Grill. On stage, working around a tight jazz quartet called The Otherz, is the man who has been called a miracle, a genius, a modern-day priest of dance: Savion Glover." - NorthJersey.com (@ Apollo Theatre)

Friday - 20th

So many good shows tonight. sigh...

"As we wobbled out of the venue under the glare of the house lights with smoke in our hair and a slight but not severe ringing in our ears, all my wife could say was "what a huge talent." I looked at my notes and next to "Skin Is, My," the only comment I had scrawled was "wow!" The same dumbfounded comment was chicken-scratched next to three other song titles. Fitting, as there's no better word to describe Andrew Bird live." - Pitchfork (@ Knitting Factory tonight & Southpaw Sunday)

It's public knowledge by now that "The Ligers" are really Stellastar. (@ Bowery Ballroom)

"And there you have Porcupine Tree's new album in a nutshell. If you're not already familiar with the band, then except a modern rock take on prog, but a heavy one. As a result of frontman Steve Wilson's time spent producing and collaborating with melodic death metal band Opeth (whose vocalist/guitarist appears on a number of tracks), Porcupine Tree are a band who are moving further and further towards realising their heavy metal fantasies." - Skiddle (@ Irving Plaza)

Deerhoof
Deerhoof

Saturday - 21st

Had enough of the all white male rock band yet? Many alternatives tonight.

"Deerhoof are an art-punk band from San Francisco that try to merge melody with noise." "In 1996, Japanese native Satomi Matsuzaki joined the group as lead singer and bassist. Her foreign accent and lack of formal voice training didn't harm her success in the role of vocalist. In fact, the contrast between her high pitched, childish voice and the often harsh, noisy aspects of the band became one of Deerhoof's trademark features. " - Wikipedia (@ Northsix tonight and Sunday)

"Martha Wainwright has a big personality. Like her brother, Rufus, she composes folk-based pop tunes with rich melodies, but where he prefers elegance, she seems constantly on the verge of a primal scream." - Mother Jones (@ Maxwells)

"There's no denying Yamagata's influences, and no, they're not just Carole King and Roberta Flack. "Letter Read" and "Under My Skin" sound dead-on like they were lifted directly from an early Fiona Apple CD, complete with the tangle-finger piano-chords-to-minor arrangements." - lazy-i (@ Joe's Pub)

Does anyone know how to get tickets for show's at the Delancey? I called the main number and the dude was completely clueless. He said to try ticketweb but there was no listing for the Matt Pond PA show. Help!!!

For downbeat fans, Thievery Corporation is at Spirit on Friday. Not sure about this venue, but if you dig dubby latino electronic beats then be sure to check out the DC duo.

Regarding PTV, their last few shows here in NYC consisted basically of covers of their hits. Now in a new form, they really don't pull it off. Genesis nevertheless is always worth seeing. Apparently they recorded an album recently, so hopefully they'll delve into new music live.

Coldplay is at the Beacon Theatre on Tuesday.

Also, Wednesday night at Hiro (GBH promotion)...

THE SMITHS (DJ SET)
Andy Rourke of THE SMITHS will be DJing (which we are very excited about. He will be joined by La Push, Alex English (Girls & Boys) and cheeky resident DJ Nick Marc (Tiswas). Plus we will be hosting the official after-show parties for The Doves and Mando Diao.

i just saw Conor Oberst walking down the street in chicago this weekend. stalker photos here

Stalkers should be hung. That said, I'd be willing to sell the addresses of Maggie Gylenhaal and Helena Christenson for a good price.
