Upcoming

2005_05_artsfriday13th.gifFriday the 13th stopped being scary for us when we were younger, rebellious and declaring things like "13, in fact, is our lucky number". We embraced the superstition and turned it in to our lucky day. Or, as it turns out, just another day. Anyway, we were hoping that some theater in this city would be showing Friday the 13th: Jason Takes Manhattan, but no such...luck. You'll have to deal with these other non-scary events:

THEATER: Wendy Mclouds The House of Yes will be performed tonight at the Bowery Poetry Club under the direction of Irene Carroll. We've only seen this in it's film format but we're certain the dark humor and madness is all the better on stage.
Details: Bowery Poetry Club [308 Bowery] / Tonight / 10pm / $11

MUSIC: Tonight at unfortunately named venue Crash Mansion [199 Bowery] catch the following lineup starting at 9pm (including a band with an unfortunate fake-name): "Coke D*ck" (aka The Madison Strays), the GoStation, Morning Theft, the Murdochs, Hello Nurse. [This show is free if you rsvp here.]
What is it with the faux names of New York bands these days? One day we'll do a post about them and it will include equations like "the Ligers = Stel..." nevermind. Get the rest of your music goings-on at the bottom of this post.

2005_05_artsbondgalleryjpg.jpgART: Pavel Kraus shows his latest works mixed in with past pieces in an installation called Levitation [pictured at right]. The large scale sculptural wall series will be on view at the Bond Gallery today through June 25th. The sculptures mostly consist of wood, beeswax and pigment...with sound created specifically for Kraus by composer Dennis Bathory-Kitsz.
So come experience the psychological gravitas.
Details: Bond Gallery [5 Rivington St] / Today through June 25th

Like a little book with your art? Serendipitously coinciding with the Bicycle Film Festival John Glassie's Bicycles Locked to Poles exhibit is the latest at Jen Bekman Gallery. The artist will also be there signing his new book (which coincides with the exhibit) from 2-4pm. Published by McSweeney's, it will be out in June.
Details: Jen Bekman Gallery [6 Spring St] / Saturday May 14th 2-4pm book signing, exhibit runs through June 11th

WALKING TOUR: Red Dive's Peripheral City takes place this weekend and is a Walking Performance Tour of Chinatown. Experience an overshadowed New York, critical points of immigration history and stories.
Details: May 15th, 22nd, 29th & 30th. June 5th & 12th / 12 pm, 1:30 pm, 3 pm / $20 / Meet at the NE corner of Canal & Eldridge

DANCING IN THE STREETS: First Warm Night is an event designed to awaken the season. Spring fever yields things like this. A renegade carnival of the carnal on the first warm weekend of the night. An indelicate exploitation of the natural exuberance of spring in the city. Taking place on an "epic city street" with roaming bands, sculpture, costumes and performers, you'll have to sign up here to find out any further details. How mysterious.

EVENT/ART: Transatlantic Doodle Down brings the best doodlers from boths sides of the pond together for a doodle showdown. Armed with pens, pencils and Poscas this unique four hour intensive doodle face off will produce art that will later be shown at the gallery. Utilizing high-end moderntechnology (a scanner, a printer and a connection to the web) drawings, scrawls and scribbles will be passed to and from each artist.
Details: Orchard Street Gallery [139 Orchard St] / Live doodling starts at 1pm on Saturday May 14th / Doodles can be viewed at Orchard May 14,15,21,22,28,29 / Free

Stay tuned over the warmer weekend for more events around town. In the meantime, why don't you buy your ticket for the Gothamist Laughable Hype Comedy Show? Seriously. Do it. We'll point and laugh at you if you don't.

Another jaded art snob I see...

Jen - the Kraus post looks great. If you are in the area tomorrow, come by and check out the exhibition.
