Built to Spill was one of the biggest indie rock bands of the 90's, and one of the biggest indie rock bands ever. Many thought they were gone forever, but they're not. Before their new album comes out this September, they'll entertain us at four recommended NYC shows: Irving, Irving, Irving, Southpaw. Also still making music: Weezer (you were eleven years younger when you first heard "Buddy Holly"). They have a new album out on Tuesday, and they're playing Roseland on Wednesday and Thursday.
You'll need a miracle to get in to Dave Matthews' sold out show tonight at Roseland. You're better off trying your luck (or spending your hard earned cash) at one of the two Trey Anastasio shows happening at Hammerstein Ballroom on Friday and Saturday. For those not following along, Trey was a member of the now-defunct Phish (the post-Grateful Dead jam band kings).
Those wanting something faster-harder-louder have a tough decision to make on Thursday night. Mastodon is up and coming fast in the heavy metal world. This summer they play the second stage of Ozzfest. Thursday night they play Bowery Ballroom (sold out). The alternative is Thunderbirds are Now! at Knitting Factory. It's amazingly still not sold out. Their site (where you can also listen to a track) says that "Thunderbirds are Now! deliver catchy, smart, melodic, fast, direct and danceable rock with a nod to late ‘70s and early ‘80s post-punk."
Hip-hop fans, don't let the Pharcyde show Friday night at The Hook pass you by (I am so cheesy, I know). This is the group best known for their 1991 gold album entitled Bizarre Ride II (and the hit song "Passing Me By"). Think De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Jungle Brothers... Think Tickets. Think soul. Soul man, James Brown plays BB King's Blues Club on Wednesday.
And now the day by day...

System of a Down used the F-word on Saturday Night Live. Tonight they play a "small venue" show before hitting the larger venues with Mars Volta in a few months. We love Kimya Dawson and definitely think you should go listen to her inspirational, humorous, and catchy anti-folk songs at the Glass House Gallery in Brooklyn.
British Sea Power (actually from Britian) are a popular enough band to sell out two nights at Bowery Ballroom all by themselves, but we bought our tickets mainly for the show opener. Feist is a Canadian female vocalist best known for her work with Broken Social Scene. Her album was just released in the U.S.A., but the Internet'a been buzzing about it since it came out in Canada last year. We're thinking that next time around she'll be the headliner.

What did I miss?

Can't wait for the new Built to Spill. I was iffy on their last one... I hope I'm not turning into one of those crotchety old fogeys who say "They used to be good, but now - eh."
wait a second, Madison Strays are getting big enough that they have to play under a pseudonym? eek. Call me when the new new wave is old enough to retire.
hey, weird. doug martsch (built to spill) and i went to high school together. didn't know there were any halfway famous bands from idaho. go figure! too bad the show's sold out.
and wow, the pharcyde in red hook? thanks gothamist, i haven't seen them since '92 in LA. this i've gotta see.
