Flat Rates to JFK From Manhattan?

2005_01_taxi.jpgAn organizations representing taxi drivers is asking the Taxi and Limousine Commission to create a Manhattan-JFK $45 flat rate. Much like the JFK-to-Manhattan flat rate, cabbies are looking to make sure they get airport business, with the main concern being that livery drivers tend to rip off tourists at big hotels. Plus, the group argues that many people heading to JFK are confused, as they think there is an existing $45 rate already.

Currently, if you live uptown, it costs more than $45 to head to JFK while it's cheaper than $45 leaving from downtown. Gothamist feels this idea is fine, but for people who live in areas that cabs rarely frequent, it's a moo point. (Yes, moo point!) There are always car services and the Air Train to make getting to the airport easier. And Gothamist on the Air Train.

Just a tip: we don't call it the "Metro" here.

Joey: You're kind of what I like to call a moo point..

    Rachel: Moo?

Joey: Yeah, a cow's opinion. It doesn't matter. It's moo.

I live close by Grand Central so I always take the New York Airport bus to JFK ($15) and LGA ($13 I think). It's more expensive than taking the Metro but a lot faster and much more convenient if you have a lot of luggage.

I can't wait til the complete gentrification of LES! Get rid of all the bums and cheap bastards. Price them out of the city!

So the flat rate would help out people on the upper west side, and screw people on the lower east side, all because of confused tourists. Right.

Actually, for convenience -- I'd suggest taking the subway to the Atlantic Ave hub, and then calling one of the local Park Slope car services (i.e. Arecibo). That'll run you roughly $30, and you've only spent $2 on the train.

I mean, it's only $15 less than what they're suggesting, but $15 is two or three drinks on the plane.

Take the Airtrain + LIRR or Subway.

Not as convenient but can be worth the trip if you have time to kill. Even cabbies can be a hassle.

I think they get lost on purpose just to run up the meter, even if you give them exact directions on where to turn.

A lot of them are assholes anyway not to mention a good number of them racially profile. Ask Danny Glover. I feel his pain.

Damn. I'd forgotten how expensive a cab ride to JFK was. $45 bucks?!? Those few lousy miles in the cab cost as much as a one way ticket on JetBlue! It's highway robbery, I tell ya.
