Derby Day in Brooklyn

2005_05_food_derby.jpgThis Saturday, May 7th will mark the 131st Kentucky Derby at the venerable Churchill Downs in Louisville. But, this year Brooklynites will be happy to learn that they can partake of the festivities without leaving Atlantic Avenue.

The popular watering hole Floyd NY (named after an Iowa town, but co-owned by a proud Kentuckian) is hosting a full day of events, starting at 1pm with a complimentary Governor's Brunch, complete with Country Ham, Buttermilk Biscuits, Olive Nut Sandwiches, Benedictine Sandwiches and the pub's famous Kentucky Beer Cheese.

What about Mint Juleps? Have no fear. This traditional Derby Day libation will be on hand, as well as several Bourbon drink specials.

Bluegrass music? The Cobble Hillbillies promise to be in fine form.

And, to "cap" off the day before the race begins at 7pm, the bar will host a Derby Hat Contest. The most innovative chapeau will garner a $25 gift certificate. That should buy the lucky hat-wearer lots of Kentucky Beer Cheese.
