Chappelle's Show Production Problems

The long-awaited return of the third season of Chappelle's Show will actually be an even longer-awaited return, as Comedy Central has yanked the premiere and stopped production. Augh!! Even though it's funny, seeing "The Niggas" for the literally 50th time is wearing on us! But enough about us, as we'll take The Mad Real World any day. Variety's article (registration req'd) said Chappelle had to "seek treatment for unspecified personal issues." Personal issues after getting $50 million for two more seasons of Chappelle's Show? Blog loosie has a lot of dirt, saying that insiders on the set confirm that Chappelle's behavior is "increasingly erratic; he regularly arrives hours late for shooting and has disappeared for days at a time without offering an explanation for his absence." Also, loosie reports that a "demented-looking" Dave Chappelle was at a Midtown ATM last week, where it took a minute for the ATM to spit out all the cash and he forgot about his card, leaving it to another customer to run after him with the card. As the report goes, Chappelle thanked her in a slurred speech and "has not returned to the set" since.

Hmm. Gothamist hopes that this will turn out more like "Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories" than an "E! True Hollywood Story" where the focus of the story dies. We will just watch Half-Baked again and keep our fingers crossed.

I know what it is . . . Its CRACK!

I think he took Tyrone's character a little too seriously.

So here's a bit more, DC goes up to the 5th floor of 18 East 16th St. for his "Treatment." This is a personal trauma counseling center, as far as I know.

White folk everywhere are crying at this announcement right now. Nowhere else can we laugh at black jokes without feeling like a cracker at a Def Jam Comedy show.

I never got into this show. I can't quite understand why it was such a phenomenon. I did always love his stand up specials, but the show fell flat with me. Did anyone else feel like they were missing the joke with this show?

Its not for every personality. Alot of people wont get alot of the humor or the stereotypes it makes fun of.

If your over a certain age, like 35, maybe 40, or
If you were brought up in the middle of a white town and not exposed to city life or black people in anyway, you wont understand the show.

I'm white, 23, and I've lived in Brooklyn for half my life. I don't know if that's quite why it doesn't hit the mark for me.

Er, I don't think Kojak's comment is very fair to the first poster. Chappelle's stand up specials are phenomenally well-crafted and performed. The show by comparison is slap-dash, unfunny, and has bad acting. It's a 3 or 4 compared to the 10 of the hour long special.

According to his publicist: "He's not in rehab. He does not have a cocaine addiction," Mr. Labov said.

Translation: He's in rehab. He has a heroin addiction.

haha - someone says:

Haha.. thats EXACTLY who thinks his show is funny. Younger inner city people kinda think he is hung up on race in the old way that is draining and devisive. Look, it even allowed Jen to say the N word on gothamist without anyone getting upset.

Of course.. I am upset that I just came here and saw that posted.

Here's hoping that this is all a high-concept publicity stunt.

I have to point out an inconsistency in Loosie's Dave Chapelle/ATM story. This totally jumped out at me when I read it.

Okay, it says that Chappelle "repeatedly swiped his card" and a bit later it says, "After the comedian staggered out of the bank, my spy shimmied up to the ATM to find Mr. Chappell's ATM card still sitting in the machine."

If it's the type of ATM where you SWIPE your card, how would the card still be "sitting in the machine"? This doesn't make sense, and it makes me suspect that this story is fabricated.

I think Dave is the BEST! He is great and I love him! All he needs is a blow job and he will be fine! If you read this Dave I AM AVAILABLE!

Hey-- I'm 36, half white, half Puerto Rican, and I grew up listening to another true original: Richard Pryor. And I love the Chapelle show, so whatever young fool wrote that 'if you're over 35 you won't get it' crap you better get some respect. Just cause some fool is lame and doesn't get Chapelle it isn't because of their age. Me and my generation were laughing at hardcore comedy since before your daddies met your mommies.
