Mayoral Race Heats Up

With the election two hundred days away (or just about that, depending on how you count), the mayoral race is starting to get into get kicked into high gear. Former City Council Speaker Peter Vallone of Queens endorsed City Council Speaker Gifford Miller. NY1 points out the scary thing about the Vallone-Miller connection, aside from both having Speaker experience: "Miller finds himself in a similar position as Vallone did four years ago. In 2001, Vallone constantly trailed in the polls and eventually lost the Democratic Primary." Yikes!

Newsday had a very nice look at the shifting ground for Democrats in the race, as the Mayor has, surprisingly, high (for him) approval ratiings. The big wild card is whether or not Manhattan Borough President C. Virginia Fields will be able to step up and seize the lead amongst Democrats by getting out their and explaining what she stands for. Gothamist tries to follow the various candidates, and quite honestly, Fields is the one we hear the least of, so we're wary that her support is more a "she's the least offensive." Maybe she needs a new PR tactic. And The Politicker says that at Fernando Ferrer's fundraiser last night, he "really turned it on for the first time in a while...[promising] to fight and throw punches." Well, Gothamist still wants to put a fork in him. And if you have any insights on this year's campaign, let us know!

Nola makes a decent point. Those stones don't turn up at the polls anyhow...

If the overpaid paper shufflers at the Board of Ed, the overgrown kids who populate those Critical Mass freak shows and the moochers who think someone else should pay their rent are all opposed to Bloomberg then I'm for him. Thank goodness he is running against the most inept cast of characters imaginable. They almost make Dinkins look competent.

  • Here's what's gonna cost Mayor Bling... I'd give him a once-over, except I can't get past this stadium thing. I don't want my taxes paying for it, and now the rebuilding effort at Ground Zero is foundering on his watch (and in part because he's forsaken downtown for the stadium). Gimme all the facts you want about crime being down (true), schools inching upward (true), but his arrogance and incompetence and tin ear for what the people are saying are just too much to overcome.

Problem is there's just one empty suit after another on the other side of the aisle. And I'll say it again: This race was Freddy's to lose, and that's just what he's done.

  • For all of Bloomberg's faults, none of the Dems have convinced me that they would do a better job. It doesn't help that whenever I see one of them on Kirtzman & co, or anything else on television, all they do is talk about "campaign strategy" or bitch about the stadium. Surely there must be other things that new yorkers are concerned with.

  • I must add that I met Gifford Miller recently while he and some others were handing out anti-stadium lit outside the subway on 12th st. near 7th ave.

OK, "met" is a bit strong. I shook his hand and he said something he'd probably (certainly) said to everyone who was going to the 1/9/2/3

This being said, I've gotta tell you that he's incredibly, astonishingly, disturbingly attractive in person. Disturbing because Mormon Missionaryish dudes with short hair in blue suits don't do it for me. But he seemed so passionately sincere and in a flash I got a "Wow, this dude could be president" vibe. I know, I sound insane.

But even though a hot mayor would be nice, I have to admit, I like Bloomberg.

    Not insane, really,

I can't turn on the TV without Gifford Miller being on it, surrounded by helpless looking C-list politicians looking on as he blubbers on about his latest innocuous outrage. He must spend 24 hours in a suit and live in some sort of television camera focused Skinner Box. Freddie Ferrer constantly looks confused and is about as potent as the postman from mr. rogers neighborhood. Maybe being mayor is such a thankless task that the job only appealls to mediocre candidates.

Let me add that Bloomberg uses the police force as his own gestapo, which continuously violates court orders regarding the critical mass riders' clear right to freedom of speech (also note the recent NYTimes article exposing officers who were caught lying about their encounters with protesters). He says he is for gay marriage, but not only appealed the court's ruling, but lined his court papers with arguments comparing gay relationships to insest (gothamist filters will not let me spell this word correctly). Anybody but Bloomberg.

I'm for Bloomberg. Rent hikes have less to do with him and more to do with higher energy, property values and labor costs. Also, I like the work he's doing in the outer boroughs. I think he's been one of the best mayor's we've had of late and I like the fact he owes no favors since he was never a career politian. He doesn't need to have his hands in others pockets. In NYC it is impossible to make everyone happy, it's too diverse a place... Agree or disagree with him, he does what he thinks is right which is all one could really ask.

I know a few people in the Board of Education, excuse me, the Department of Education (I wish I had the figure on how much it cost to switch the letterhead, it was a lot of pencils and paper) who are a bit less pleased with him. From my understanding, he has decided to rip through the system and change things willy nilly (like pointlessly changing the organization name).

A successful corporate BOSS does not translate into a successful political LEADER.

    Oops. MUST go.

He’s completely disconnected from reality if he thinks bars should close at 1am.

Remember? This is called the city that never sleeps... Im just starting to get buzzed at 1am. It'll take be the rest of the night to get pissass drunk.

For this reason alone, I'd vote him out

"Bloomberg has plans to institute a license that would effectively close nighttime establishments at 1am."

    I remember this.

    Your right. Bloomberg just go.

  • Blike Moomberg

Bloomberg appointed all of the members of the Rent Guidelines board, and we're having the highest successive rent hikes in NYC history. Bloomberg raised property taxes by 18.5%, the largest hike in NYC history. Bloomberg opposed the Equal Benefits bill. Bloomberg fired members of the Panel for Educational Policy for simply voting against something he wanted. Bloomberg has plans to institute a license that would effectively close nighttime establishments at 1am. Bloomberg dismissed the fact that over 400 people have been cleared of unlawful arrests by video evidence of the NYPD. Great reasons to re-elect a mayor. (Sarcasm)

  • Kojak

I'll vote for Bloomy again, only because hes a Democrat in the Republican party. Why not have someone who plays on both sides?

Plus hes not doing too bad of a job himself. Not too good of a job either. More or less.
