When Willamsburg Trees Wear Necklaces

2005_04_linden.jpg

Did you realize that today is Arbor Day? Gothamist didn't! Luckily, red pointed us to Carbon Based Forms's awesome Arbor Day gift to some trees in Williamsburg: Fifty trees along Bedford Avenue, between North 4th and North 10th Streets, each received a brass vanity necklace with type of tree, thanks to artists Cate Bryant and Gregory Kenney. CBF adds "have a look before they disappear, either through theft or happenstance." You can sponsor a necklaced tree here. And here's the picture that red took earlier of a Zelkova tree.

You can also volunteer with the Parks Department to count trees. And our other tree coverage of the day: Asian longhorned beetles were found in Central Park.

"The last Friday in April marks the 133rd anniversary of the Tree-Planting Holiday!

Founded by J. Sterling Morton in Nebraska in 1872, National Arbor Day is celebrated each year on the last Friday in April."

so really, it could never be in june, could it?

This is the dumbest shit I've ever heard of. Someone needs to put these artists and the Williamsburg Warriors on a Greyhound bus with a one way ticket out of town before they embarrass everyone in Brooklyn any further.
