New Yorkers get bored easily – it’s not a stereotype, just a function of our environment. We are constantly stimulated with new and exciting things – making a trip to the bodega for a $5 pint of milk, an adventure. So as we were sipping on our pomegranate mojito last week – Gothamist felt that familiar pang, oh yes it was boredom, and it left us shaken and a little stirred.
Gothamist believes in a great cure for boredom – drinking, how perfect for us. So we strapped on our drinking shoes and went in search of a shiny new cocktail. Here are some cocktails that woke up our taste buds:
Eye Of The Tiger
This cocktail adds a tigerish bite to what otherwise tastes like an innocent fruity mixture.
1 oz gold rum
1 oz Malibu
1 oz cranberry juice
1 oz lemon juice
1 oz of orange juice
1 oz sugar syrup
1/2 oz dark rum
Shake all but the last ingredient with ice, and strain into a highball glass half-filled with ice. Drizzle the dark rum on the surface of the drink and garnish with a slice of orange. Grrrr…
Kir Lethale
The reason why this drink should come with a warning label is that it goes down so easy. This is also a great cocktail to make for dinner parties – here’s a recipe for 6:
6 vodka soaked raisins
2 tbsp vodka
4 1/2 tbsp crème de casis
1 bottle of brut champagne
Place a vodka soaked raison in champagne flute, add 1 tsp vodka and 2 tsp of crème de cassis to each glass and top off with champagne. Champagne purists – please reserve your angry comments. If you can’t have fun with champagne than what’s the point?
Buckaroo
This cocktail, had Gothamist at Buckaroo – there is something so liberating about marching up to the bar on a packed night and saying without apologies, “I’ll have a buckaroo”.
6 tsp bourbon
1/2 tsp of Angostura bitters
4 oz of Coca-Cola
Combine the bourbon and bitters in a highball glass with ice. Stir briskly and top with cola. Giddy-up.
Cable Car
A great twist on a classic. We had this cocktail recently at the Bellagio in Las Vegas and we quickly forgot about the money we lost at the blackjack table (damn you evil dealer).
1 1/4 oz of Captain Morgan’s Rum
3/4 oz of orange curacao
1 1/4 oz of Sweet and Sour mix
Mix all ingredients into an ice-filled shaker. Shake. Strain into a chilled, sugar and cinnamon rimmed cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange spiral twist. Do not head back to the tables.
Well this should keep us interested for the time being – or at least until the hang over sets in.





I think you need to rework that first recipe. Is it ounces or tablespoons???

Re: The Buckaroo
When I was bartending, one of my regular customers was a grizzled old vet named Herc, who would order a Scurvy Buccaneer, basically the same drink with a wedge of lime. Scurvy is a disease brought on by a vitamin C deficiency, which famously besieged many long voyages.. so doctors thought introducing a lime to a sailor's rum was the most reliable way to up their vitamin C intake. Hence the scurvy buccaneer. So yar. Cheers.
