The Daily News reports that the NYPD has apprehended one of the teenagers who attacked a runner in Central Park Thursday night. The fourteen year old was part of a group of teens, about six to ten in total. In fact, Kim commented about the attack yesterday in our comments section and explained that he didn't believe the iPod was the main reason why he was attacked:
it sucked (I'm the victim in the story by the way)...but i don't think they originally attacked me for my Ipod, I think they were just there to cause trouble, apparently I was told by the police that kids up in that corner of CP like to harrass passing cyclists by throwing rocks at them. Luckily, all they got away with was my ipod and left me with a black eye. The police has been doing a good job with this and might have already caught one of the kids with the aid of a witness who chased one of them down after assaulting me... Let me reiterate this one more time, even though my ipod was stolen, it wasn't obvious I had one at the time, I'm pretty discreet with it, I think they only realized I had one when they got up close. There were a lot of people there which is why the attack was so short...a lot of the bystanders came to my aid. Although I'm a little shaken, I'm hoping this doesn't faze me from my normal routine of running there, but again, I'm reconsidering taking the 102 St. cutoff.iPods, however, have become one of the most popular snatches, contributing to an uptick in subway crime.
As for running in the city at night, if you join the New York Road Runners Club, you can find a running partner.

Man gets ass kicked by a bunch of kids. While man gets ass handed to him, Man Gets his ipod stolen. So why focus on this more then any other mugging that happens in this city? BECAUSE HE HAD HIS IPOD SNATCHED, OMG!!!
Would this story be on Gothamist if he didn’t have his ipod taken, or if his ipod wasnt on him at the time? Cause you know, ipods are more important than our own physical safety.
I think the gothamist makes a good point that the ipod has become the new eightball jacket. It seemed inevitable.
They did not target him for his Ipod.
It was a hate crime. or, some would say some youths with nervous energy, only thing was it was a dozen nervous energy beating up a human being.
This is nothing new. Consider it a mini "wilding" incident.
If you play golf in some of the city's public courses you'll see the same behavior, only thing is, you have guys fighting back with a bag full of clubs.
A guy I know got jumped a while back in Prospect Park by a group of kids. He didn't have an iPod, they just wanted to beat someone up. unfortunately he wasn't as lucky as Kim as far as bystanders. Another runner came by, scattering the kids, but then kept on running rather than help.
I got jumped by a bunch of kids last night for my iPod. I was an idiot and was wearing it at 11 p.m., which I never do. I was lucky that a lady said they were calling the cops, but the kids -- about 16 or 17 -- were already getting jumpy when they failed to knock me over and realized I was much bigger than them. One of them said he had a gun, and I figured the kids hanging back may have had knived (hell, I would if I were going to go about town mugging people). Fuck it -- it was just a 512MB Shuffle. Now if it was an iPod Photo…

Why did you call him Kim? It's clear his name is Ben.
His name is Benjamin Kim.
Heh heh, Gothamist said "most popular snatches".
Heh heh heh heh heh
It's too bad that someone can't go jogging late at night in Central Park, or any big park in the city. Lets face it, it's been that way in NYC for a long time, my entire life. Most people know better than to risk going jogging alone in Central Park. Usually it's the yuppies who move to the city that do these foolish things.
Sorry, the victim's name is Benjamin Kim. I should note that. It was weekend posting!
