Among the 400 expected celebrants will be comedian Judy Gold, Daily Show writer Eric Drysdale, singing duo What I Like About Jew and via video, Al Franken and Lewis Black among many, many other performers.

The newest offering to the improv world in New York is The Magnet Theater. Run by Armando Diaz who is widely considered the best improvisation instructor in the city, and fellow Chicago trained improvisers Ed Herbstmann, Abby Sher and Shannon Manning, the Magnet is now fully open for classes and shows. Gothamist attended the grand opening of the theater last weekend that was kicked off by The Project and judging from the standing room only, we believe this magnet (pun alert!) will have no trouble attracting an audience.
The Magnet Theater 254 W. 29th Street
Beauty Love Truth - Friday April 22 @ 8pm $5
The Project – Saturday April 23 @ 10pm $5

Those of us who feel pangs of regret when we think about our colored braces, membership to Odyssey of the Mind and the unanswered notes we slipped into cute artboy’s locker are exactly the crowd the creators of Mortified are targeting. In the show, which was originally produced in L.A. in 2002 and still being performed there, performers share true horror stories from adolescence for what one can only assume is a cathartic release…as they call it, “personal redemption through public humiliation". Submissions come from a wide range of participants, from professional performers (comics, celebrities, singers) to total amateurs (soccer moms, ad execs, salesmen). All in the noble pursuit of self-degradation.
Sunday April 24 @ 8pm at The Tank 432 W. 42nd Street $10
