Brooklyn might be "easy on the wallet", but up until about 5-6 years ago, all Sumerstage concerts were free. There was the rare exception or two, but nothing like the way it's run now. Jon Spencerr Blues Explosion, Joan Jett, and tons of others. ALL free. And no stupid security fencs and junk either. Welcome to the New New York! Let's get E-Z Passes made for municipal concerts at this rate.

Celebrate Brooklyn has had Flaming Lips, Malkmus and Yo La Tengo, too. There's also the East River Music Project, which had some great bands last year -- Aa, White Magic, Sharon Jones, Ted Leo, Double Leopards. Before that they hosted Parts + Labor, The Double, etc. WAY better than paying through the nose to hear low-end washout at Summerstage.

Jen, last yr saw Pere Ubu and Clem Snide share a friday evening. That was worth it alone. Beautiful weather, relaxed show, great performances. After all the trips out during the 10-day restaurant week, my wallet needs to take it easy!

ITA, JT. The Celebrate Brooklyn series was really fun last year (I forget what the "big" events were, but I remember seeing B & S and Cake in past years). And easy on the wallet.

I'll save my money and wait until the Prospect Park Bandshell concert series is announced, although I do like the Summerstage lineup thus far.

actually, summerstage is not back yet. the schedule is only for the benefit concerts. the full summerstage 05 schedule will be online on May 18th, according to the website. Check back here on Wednesday, May 18, 2005 for the full season schedule.

Just to clarify, that's the schedule for the benefit concerts only. The list of free, or near-free, concerts won't be released until next month.
