Having the biggest contract in baseball makes you a target, having that contract while playing for the Yankees gives you no place to hide. Coming into Monday night’s game against the Devil Rays, Alex Rodriguez was one of the chief scapegoats of the Yankees’ poor start and on Monday night he responded to his critics with his bat. A Rod went 5 for 6 with two home runs and drove in six runs as the Yankees cruised to a 19-8 triumph over the Devil Rays. Every Yankee player collected a hit during a thirteen run explosion in the second inning.
While one game does not make a season, Monday night was an important test for the 2005 Yankees. After twelve games, everyone was pushing the panic button and questions about the age of the club were starting to crop up. While this game will be meaningless if the Yankees do not follow it up with a few more wins, it should allay some of the doubts for a few days.
Tonight, the Yankees will conclude their brief series with the Devil Rays with Randy Johnson attempting to pitch the Yankees to their first back-to-back wins in almost two weeks. After that, it is on to Toronto for two games against the Blue Jays with Carl Pavano and Mike Mussina taking the hill for the Yankees.

Alex Rodriguez does well against the Devil Rays. La Di Dah. He may put up some good numbers this year, but he never performs when it means something.
No World Series this year, either!
still not a "quality start" from a yankee pitcher. time to go out and get another arm, george.
yankees fans are ricock man...its like the third week of the season and they're "pushing the panic button" already...are you f'n kidding me...i have a prediction, and im not really goin out on too much of a limb here, but i bet the yankees make the playoffs and i bet they are playing for the pennant come sept/oct...a bunch of f'n hypochondriacs...i really hope they f'n blow this year so i can see the daily Post headlines bitching about the death of a franchise or some absurd bullshit...go METS!!!
Seriously Tien... he got the win despite giving up 11 hits and 7 ER in 5 IP (ERA: 13.50)... that will lose them more games than it will win them, as they won't always score 19 runs to beat a poor, young team.
Consider this the "Rockies" effect... not to disparage the Devil Rays too much, but statistics against them are lop-sided much like any stats from playing in Colorado.
Nice win against the Devil Rays' No. 5 starter, guys! Way to light the torch!
Lost in all the hubbub about responding to the boss is the fact that Jaret Wright seems to be determined to prove that, yes, he really does suck and that, double yes, Leo Mazzone of the Braves really is the most brilliant pitching coach of all time. Six earned runs in five innings? If your offense is sandblasting some hack on the D-Rays, great, but this kinda performance won't cut it against better teams, and the Yankees and their fans damn well know it.
It's worth noting that 19-8 was the final score of ALCS Game 3, when it all went horribly, horribly wrong for Standard Baseball Inc.
I think A-Rod deserves a paid vacation after last night. He sure earned his money beating up on Rod Bell's and Lance Carter's fastballs like that. Incredible!
Randy better beat the Rays tonight, cause you know you're going to lose both in Toronto.
Ted Lilly and Gustavo Chacin are going to own Pavano and Mussina after Thursday.
Once again - Jared Wright is Brutal!
Way for the Cooler to really step it up against the Devil Rays! He always comes up big when there is nothing on the line.
Maybe it's the age of the players, but it does seem to me that the Yankees already look tired and the season is just beginning. I don't feel that they have the old "sizzle" or previous years.
