Winning Streak Ends on Miscues

It was bound to happen and it was sheer joy for Mets fans while it lasted, but their win streak is over at 6 games. Sunday afternoon, the Mets lost the 3rd game of their series against the Marlins, 5-2. A.J. Burnett pitched a 4 hit, 2 run complete game for the Marlins, his 2nd complete game of the season. If the pitching of Burnett wasn't enough, the Mets helped the Marlins too. Jose Reyes had two errors in the game, but the boos were reserved for Kaz Matsui.

Matsui, who was out three games because of a scratch on his eye, botched four plays that extended innings and eventually allowed runs to score. In the 3rd inning, the sellout crowd voiced their displeasure at Matsui, including some calls for Miguel Cairo, who played well while Matsui was out. None of Matsui's mistakes were scored errors. Despite the fan reaction, both Willie Randolph and Omar Minaya support the 2nd baseman.

The Mets take the show on the road tonight as they face the Phillies and Marlins in a pair of two game series. They return this weekend to face the NL East leading Nationals.
