Swept Away

Last October, the Yankees turned to Kevin Brown to save their season, Sunday they turned to him to save their weekend; once again he failed. Brown was the latest victim of the Orioles’ bats as they pounded him for six runs on their way to an 8-4 victory. Over the weekend, the Orioles outscored the lifeless Yankees 23-11, by getting clutch hitting and solid pitching.
To make matters worse for the Yankees, owner, George Steinbrenner vented his frustration publicly after the game issuing a statement saying, “Enough is enough. I am bitterly disappointed as I’m sure all Yankee fans are by the lack of performance by our team. It is unbelievable to me that the highest-paid team in baseball would start the season in such a deep funk. They are not playing like true Yankees. They have the talent to win and they are not winning. I expect Joe Torre, his complete coaching staff and the team to turn this around.”
At 4-8, the Yankees are off to their worst start since 1991 and look to be overburdened by expectations. Steinbrenner’s comments will probably not help alleviate that situation, so somebody will have to step up and carry this team. Jaret Wright will get the chance today as he takes the mound against the Devil Rays when the Yankees return to the Stadium. The Yankees can only hope that he is up to the challenge.
