Ring Around the Bases

Monday Afternoon, the Yankees watched the Red Sox receive their World Series rings and then watched as the Red Sox ran circles around them. For the second game in a row, the Yankees looked listless as they succumbed to the Red Sox 8-1. Tim Wakefield continued his mastery of the Yankees, giving up only one run in seven innings by fooling the Yankee hitters with his knuckleball.

The Yankee offense collected only five hits total. One week into the season, the Yankees are hitting .262 as a team with Jason Giambi, Tino Martinez and Bernie Williams all hitting under .200. Getting those three going will be a big focus for Hitting Coach, Don Mattingly, over the next few games.

The Yankees will face the Red Sox again on Wednesday and Thursday, sending Jaret Wright and Randy Johnson to the mound, before heading to Baltimore to face the Orioles over the weekend. The Yankees found out yesterday that Carl Pavano is okay after being hit by a line drive and will be able to make his scheduled start on Friday. Mike Mussina will pitch Saturday and Kevin Brown is expected to be activated from the DL in time for the start on Sunday.

That was just embarassing. I'm only hoping it was the Yanks being nice and letting the Sox have one on the day they raised their World Series banner. All I can say is it better not happen again!

The only place that Mattingly should have Martinez and Williams "get going" to is the personnel office, so they can start collecting their pensions and leave the baseball to people who still have cartilage in their knees. Otherwise Michael Lewis will be arriving shortly to start reporting for his next book, "GeezerBall."
