Thank You, Goodnight, Mets Win!

Seven days after starting the season, the New York Mets have their first win, a 6-1 victory against the Atlanta Braves. Pedro Martinez pitched a two hit complete game, allowing only one run and one walk. Martinez was in line to get the first win for the Mets on Opening Day as well, but we all know how that went. Five losses later, Martinez still gets the first win of the season, and the Mets are no longer the only winless team in baseball. Willie Randolph, in his first season as a manager, also gets his first victory.

Through seven innings of the pitcher's duel between Martinez and John Smoltz, it looked like the Mets would remain winless, but the bats came alive for 5 runs in the 8th. Smoltz picked up the loss despite 15 strike outs. For his part, Martinez had 9 K's and retired the final 16 batters to end the game.

The offense in the 8th started with a Jose Reyes single. After moving to 2nd on a sac bunt, by Miguel Cairo, Carlos Beltran hit a two-run home run to give the Mets the lead. That was all they needed, but Cliff Floyd added a solo homer and David Wright added a two-run homer to give Martinez a nice cushion. Beltran singled in Reyes in the 9th as well, giving him two hits and three RBI in the game.

The Mets have their home opener today against the Houston Astros and send Tom Glavine to the mound to face Andy Pettitte. If that's not enough former Yankee for you, Roger Clemens is scheduled to pitch Wednesday's game.
