Mets Still Waiting to Win

Three games into the young baseball season and the Mets have lost three games. Obviously not a great start. In fact, it's the worst start for the Mets since 1964. Let's just hope they don't do quite as poorly as the '64 Mets did - they finished the year with a 53-109 record. When asked about the losses, Doug Mientkiewicz said, "There's not one guy in this room that expected this." Well, that's good to know.

In yesterday afternoon's 6-1 loss, Kaz Ishii issued four walks and allowed five earned runs in 6.2 innings. The first two walks were to the first batters he faced in the game. Those, combined with Kaz Matsui's error, helped put the Mets in an early two run hole. With some offense, they might have been able to come close, but there was none to be had. The Mets didn't score or get their 2nd hit until the 8th inning. Given a chance to rally in the 9th, Mike Piazza pinch hit to end the game on a pop-up.

Next up for the Mets are the Atlanta Braves, winners of the last 13 NL East titles. At least the Mets can take comfort in the fact that there are 159 games left and the Braves won the NL East after a poor first half. Psh, why are we talking halves, we're still in week one.
