Christopher Guest at MoMA: "Peanut. Hazelnut..."

2005_04_harlan.jpg

Gothamist is so excited about the Museum of Modern Art's Christopher Guest tribute. Starting tonight, his films, including the ones he directed and co-wrote (A Mighty Wind, Best in Show, Waiting for Guffman), and The Big Picture), one he co-wrote (This is Spinal Tap), and one he starred in (The Princess Bride), and TV work (SNL skits and more). Tomorrow night, Guest, Michael McKean and Harry Shearer are going to give some sort of performance (either as Spinal Tap, The Folksmen or something new) before discussing their work with Parker Posey and Bob Balaban - and there will be some tickets available tomorrow morning at 9:30AM at the MoMA. And here's the whole schedule.

Some fun Guest stuff for all you bastard people: A Fame Audit from Fametracker, an interview with Movie City News and Caryn James' feature on the retrospective in today's Times. It seems that Guest has always wanted to just do only three "mockumentaries" and that he doesn't really like TV except The Office. And Gothamist once shared an elevator with Guest when he was promoting Almost Heroes (Matthew Perry and Chris Farley as 18th century explorers - not being shown in the tribute). Guest asked us what we thought of his seersucker suit, and Gothamist couldn't help ourselves when the words "It's kinda Matlocky" came out. But we didn't mean Matlocky in a bad way!

What's your favorite Christopher Guest film?

Is Gothamist going? Please report on it if you do, thanks!

I would have to say for my faves, it's a tie between A Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman.

We consider ourselves to be bicoastal... if you consider the Mississippi River to be one of the coasts.

"It's that whole zen thing...like how many babies fit in a tire"

"Why don't you get one of those vagina enlargement surgeries?"

    I say Guffman,

"I hate you and I hate your ass face. I'm just going to go home and bite my pillow."

    So, so good.

It's hard for me to pick a favorite. I think it's a tie between This Is Spinal Tap and Waiting For Guffman.

"People don't like fire poked...poked in their noses."

    Best in Show. Hands down.

Never could get into Spinal Tap. Pity, that. A Mighty Wind's a respectable first runner up.
