@ the Apple Store

2005_04_artsapple.jpgLast night we were told that the Secret Machines were playing a (secret?) show at the Apple Store in Soho at 10pm. We didn't go, and haven't heard a thing about it. Did it happen, was anyone there? We need closure.

Other not so secret events at the Apple Store are coming up that also have our interest piqued.

Legendary Master of Music Photography: Bob Gruen. Gruen is one of the most well known and respected photographers in Rock ‘n’ Roll. Seriously, all of those photos you recognize of the Sex Pistols, the Clash, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, John Lennon, Bob Dylan...are probably by him.
He's giving a slide show tomorrow night, April 8th, from 7 to 9pm.

Later this month, starting April 22nd to coincide with the Tribeca Film Festival, the store will be hosting a special series of presentations to show how filmmakers use professional applications on a Mac to write, edit, and produce films. It's like your own personal Project Greenlight 101.

Everything is free (except you'll probably leave with a stronger desire to purchase that iBook). The Apple Store is located at 103 Prince Street.

UPDATE: The Secret Machines did play, check out photos here.

Yeah, we went. We'd been looking forward to it for a while. Pics on verbosecoma.com

All of the screensavers on the computers were photos of music legends that faded in and out in unison. I don't think they were Bob Gruen's (does anybody know?) but it was a really nice touch when you walked in. Another nice touch? Bowls of chewy Spree, gummi bears, and swedish fish everywhere. Bless you, Apple.

C'mon, it's PIQUED, not PEAKED.

Yeah, there were a surprising amount of gummies IN the white wine and Coronas too. Most unusual, but still delicious.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to vent about the people who go to the Apple store and just check email, go on AIM, and do other personal things while others are waiting to use the computers to actually consider a damn purchase.

I was in there on Monday trying to look at an iSight, and almost every computer was taken up by some hipper-than-thou guy or girl on Hotmail or iChat. Had to finally ask a guy (who was checking his email of course, and had been on there for a while) to quit so I could look at it. He acted like it was a personal insult or something.

And things like that happen every time.

Sorry Drew. That’s what happens when you purchase a mac. The Hipper-than thou guy/girl only uses macs because it makes them feel superior to anyone else. They assume only simpletons use PC's.

Those hipster wannabes using the mac stations are also poor hipster wannabes. They cannot afford the higher prices mac charges for their equipment, so they spend most of their time at the store playing with the gadgets in store.

Drew, why didn't you ask a store employee to help you get some time on a Mac? I had a similar experience waiting for an open computer when contemplating buying one and found the staff was more than willing to ask someone to move for me. Simple fix.

And, Kojak, so much anger at computer users! I had a PC for years, but the hipster wannabe in me was tired of dealing with all the crashes and viruses. I can't afford the high prices tech stores charge for visit after visit to repair problems. Spent more on my Mac than on a PC, sure, but I've saved hundreds by buying a machine that works.

D - I'm more than willing to ask an employee for help, my main issue is with the people who think they're entitled to just sit there using the computers for free despite others who are honestly waiting to use them for a valid purpose. I'm sure the employees would help out, I'm just sort of irked at the people who are so self-absorbed they can't imagine that their freeloading on the computers just might be inhibiting someone else.

Drew, you should go to Digital Society or Tekserve if you are serious about buying something.

Apple Store's nice to look at and browse around, but I think your experience will be much better at one of the indies.
