Readings are Fundamental

2005_04_artsreadings.jpgDidn't we once say that readings were boring? Well, if you forced us to go to a reading we'd totally pick this one tonight run by Heeb Magazine! It's part of their Storytelling series at Joe's Pub. The readers tonight include AJ Jacobs (Esquire editor and author of The Know It All ), novelist Molly Jong Fast, David Israel (musician and author of Behind Everyman),  Jelvis, (the world's greatest Jewish Elvis impersonator), Todd Levin (standup comic), Jessica Coen (editor at Gawker.com), and Najla Said (of Arab-American theater collective Nibras).  The ringmistress of ceremonies will be Rachel Feinstein.

Tickets: $15
Date & Time: Tues, Apr 5, 9:30pm
Location: Joe's Pub, 425 Lafayette Street

The readers will each have 7 minutes to tell a story, so that's only about $2.14 per reader. Not a bad deal!

This Wednesday the 92nd St Y is hosting a reading regarding many of the apartments that probably surround their building. The Writing Pad: Fact & Fiction on NYC Apartments will bring together authors Valerie Leff (Better Homes & Husbands), Cheryl Mendelson (Morningside Heights) and Karen V. Siplin (Such a Girl). Each will read from their novels, which portray the domestic life of New Yorks uppermost crust in Gotham's swellest abodes. Journalist Michael Gross, who is completing a book about New Yorks most prestigious apartment building, leads a discussion about the facts and fictions that occur behind the closed doors of New Yorks stylish apartment buildings.

Tickets: $12 in advance; $15 at the door.
Date & Time: Wed, Apr 6, 2005, 7:30pm
Location: Steinhardt Building, 35 West 67th Street

Gothamist would be more interested in knowing what takes place behind the doors of LES residents. Specifically our across the street neighbor who likes to cook soup, shirtless, on his fire escape.

Heeb Magazine???

Is anyone offended yet?

I think it's entirely an affectionate name, since all those involved are Heebs themselves (as I am!). I've never read it, though. If they can take back queer we can take back Heeb! (Did it ever go anywhere?)

I love the pic of Jennifer Connelly from the movie The Labryinth. Classic Kids movie! I'm not ashamed to admit I recently ordered from NetFlix!

Professional readings that cost money will definitely make me smarter and increase my cultural awareness. But Gothamist should also check out FREE readings that happen all over the east village/LES. One of my favorites is the Antagonist movement on Sunday nights at Black & White (10th bet. 3rd & 4th). It is funny, crass and (most of the time) thought provoking.
