The New York Press, which recently lost its editor, Jeff Koyen, after a cover story entitled "The 52 Funniest Things About the Upcoming Death of the Pope" unsurprisingly pissed a lot of people off, has come out with its annual hatefest issue: The 50 Most Loathsome New Yorkers. Making the list this year were the usual targets (politicians, editors, celebrities, etc..), with Mayor Mike taking top honors as most loathsome for "bringing the Republican National Convention to town and the mini-police state inspired by it" (among other offenses). Mayoral hopefuls Gifford Miller and Anthony Weiner also made the cut.
Gothamist certainly finds many of the people on the list objectionable, but most of them are so regularly dissed in the media anyway that seeing them dressed down by the Press doesn't afford much schadenfreud-ic pleasure. As well, if the alt-weekly feels compelled to go negative like this once a year, shouldn't it at least do a compendium "Least Loathsome" list? Surely, there are 50 New Yorkers who are smart and elegant and good-hearted enough doing their jobs and making the city better to counterbalance the perceived vulgarity, meanness and greed of the people on the list. If the Press can't find 50 people worth honoring in this way, Gothamist would be happy to suggest a few.
Who are some of your nominations for most and least loathsome New Yorkers? And Gawker's singled out some notable people on the list.

is Nola on this list?
Most loathsome: Donald Trump
Aaron Naparstek has a more complete write-up of his entry, #17. Bruce Smolka, NYPD Assistant Chief:
here
There's so many unimpressive names on the top 10, yet Judith Regan, Daniel Doctoroff, Norman Podhoertz, and Lindsay Lohan wallow in the bottom 10, I thought I was reading it upside down.
The Andrea Peyser bit is funny, though.
PS: And let's lay off Nola... I mean, I could do without his insults, too, but gees...
Jeff Koyen himself is one of the most loathesome New Yorkers.
Why Nick Denton hooked that guy up with a gig editting "Gridskipper" right after he was canned from NY Press is baffling.
Glad to see that Marty Markowitz and Amanda Burden got in there, for their attempts to turn NYC into a barren strip-mall of chain stores and big boxes, but why not Ratner?
Tony Danza is precious; he doesn't deserve to be on the list.
Totes. Leave Tiny Tony out of this. And why so mean to Frank Bruni? He doesn't NEED other people to make him look silly, thank you v. much NY Press.
Mike, I think the logic in not including Ratner is simple. He's a developer. Not a good one, but a developer none-the-less. And ultimately his job is not to really care about the city in any way. Ratner does or doesn't do things based on what he's allowed to do. And ultimately, people like Marty Markowitz are more to blame for what he attempts to do than anything else.
Ultimately public officials who do not serve the public interest are the ultimate reason why many parts of this city are sold off and developed poorly. Get someone with a spine to force the developer to work with the city, and you know what? Things would be better.
Sad. I used to support Marty Markowitz before he became Brooklyn Borough President. Now? Forget it. He shills and not much else. Hope he gets canned next election.
great list, but where's Kerik? and who the hell is nola?
How in the world did they leave of the people that run the MTA??? Peter Kalikow anyone? They cooked their books, threatened to strike, and stuck us with a silent, but deadly, fare hike.
This is Nola.
Anyone here watch the movie "What The Bleep"?
One of its main points is that emotional states, especially strong ones like anger or hating, produces physiological changes in the body. In other words, a person becomes literally addicted to the hormonal changes that result from hate or anger (and other states as well). So such people constantly need to create something that they can hate or be angry with.
In other words, the subject does not really matter. Such people are doing it for the addiction of it all.
Being on that rag's list would be an honor. And I'm flattered by the attention. Especially RC, who's like the fat kid on the sidelines holding the clipboard. I enjoy the publicity, so if you keep following me around like a little puppy I'll buy you a drink at the next Gothamist happy hour.
But let's not pretend that anyone really takes offense at my posts. After all, aren't we commenting on a cover story about "the most loathsome NYers" and didn't this same paper just mock the impending death of the Pope? My posts read like Emily Post compared to the vitriol in crappy giveaway papers like the Press and Voice.
nola: I don't think you can fairly bring the Voice down to the level of the Press (Naparstek's column not included). The Voice does do some very good investigative journalism.
Dear New York Press:
The Beast called, and they want their schtick back.
Uh, in case you didn't realize, the former editor of the Beast, Matt Taibbi, is an editor at the Press these days.
Raoul -- Point taken, although "Our hired gun editor has no new ideas" does not strike me as a substantial improvement on "we're ripping off other papers' features."
as for the 50 least loathsome new yorkers, smartypants gothamist, have you not seen the annual "best of new york" issue that NYPress has been putting out for almost 15 years? it is an annual, massive lovefest. most loathsome has only been around for three years.
have any of you read NYP lately? that self-congratulory whiner naparstek is far from the only good thing in the paper. jim knipfel? genius. judy mcguire? weekly must-read. that paper has two of the best film critics in the country-- seitz was in line for the open NYTimes spot when mitchell left. jennifer blowdryer is an NYC legend, though her food writing doesn't seem to have all that much to do with food.
can't say much for their lame arts/entertainment writers, but otherwise the paper is way more solid than the voice. if you can compare the two at all anymore.
NY Press is stiffing their writers now. Longtime contributor C.J. Sullivan was owed $2300 --- they offered him a $1000 settlement. The paper's bank is in Rhode Island, so collecting might be tough.
Knipfel's column is gone.
