iPod Thefts Don't Surprise New Yorkers

2005_03_irob.jpgThe NYPD's news that iPods may be prompting a rise in subway crime gave the media a great way to sensationalize the darling MP3 player. For instance, ABC 7 had this cute graphic (right) and this catchy opening:

If the crime had a name, it would be called 'iRob'- subway riding-thieves targeting people listening to music on their iPod. When the time is right, the thief snatches the device and hops off the train just before the doors close.
But, as with many things, iPod users aren't that surprised and seem to be trucking along: One rider explains her nonchalance to the NY Times by saying, "It was a concern when I first got it. But I live in Williamsburg, and on the L train everybody has one." So along with funky glasses and exquisitely weathered denim, iPods seem to be standard issue in Williamsburg! Not only do we like the comparison of iPods to 8-ball jackets, which were stolen during many early 90s thefts, Gothamist liked one of the reader comments from yesterday's post and now we wonder the same: When are the iPod decoys coming? Or the headphones that look like hair extensions?

To paraphrase a famous LES Crime Victim "What are you going to do STEAL MY IPOD"

So if I move to Williamsburg, they'll give me an ipod?

[thinking a split second]

Ahhhhhh, I'll stay in Flushing.

wierd... I was fuckin' ready to swipe some herb's unit last night on the G train crossover to the L train at Lorimer and then Satan told me not to, so I didn't

but damn man stop flashing that shit in my face ya fuckin' yuppie - I see you have it and you're cool ! Whatever
next time you fuck with it, better have a firm grip

Those ipods run upwards of over $600 for the most expensive 60 gig units. No wonder they're such a hot item to swipe. Same for the PSP at around $300.

Get a damn remote and use different headphones for god's sake yuppies.

Black headphones and keep the device pocketed. You might as well have a Sony cassette Walkman in there for all unsuspecting folks know.

But we know how New Yorkers have hardons for status symbols, don't we? (Uggs!)

on one end we have the sadly unaware waiting to be ripped off.

on the other end, the freakishly obsessed.

and yet eugenics continues to have a bad rap!

seriously, when was the last time someone flashed an ipod in your face?

"hey man, check it out. like my ipod, you ipodless fucker? i've got one and you don't! suck it!"

have you guys seen the Ipod face offs that are happening? you go up to someone and flash what you're playing and whoever has the better song, wins. Today, i got worked by some chick - my Pet Shop Boys didn't quite stand up to her Black Flag.

So...what happens when someone wins this game? Do you just wave your hand in their face and go "OWNED, bitch!!" or do you get a prize or what? A phone number, maybe? This could have intriguing dating possibilities. Who needs Home Depot?

Sigh.

1. The news only exacerbates the problem by informing the general public that these devices are expensive.

2. People are stealing them because they are slipping into an economic jeoprody that is caused by a confluence of events such as overseas job outsourcing, trickle-down theory economics, stalled job growth, and reduction of social services.

Just change your headphones, make a good playlist so you don't have to flash a item that costs the better part of a thousand dollars. Of course as was mentioned, it's cooler to flash it and let everyone know you are rocking an ipod. Maybe you'll meet someone on the train! Better than a Nerve personal one guesses.

That being said, there are other mp3 players out there that are just as good if not better than the iPod that won't stand out as much.

if you use others headphones it's not a statussymbol anymore...

Kojak posted some incorrect information. The 60 gb iPod's are $450 which really isnt that much money and the PSP is $250 which is even less money. Just sayin'

Go ahead and take it - I'll just go get a new one with a color screen.
