Brooklyn Social, Manhattan Rock

2005_03_artslandscapeyoungn.jpgIt's Monday, it's raining...don't let it keep you inside though. We encourage you to run through the wet streets and get yourself to one of these events. First up, in Brooklyn, local photoblogger Youngna Park will be exhibiting some works at the new Landscape Cafe [434 Union Ave in W'burg] tonight from 7-9 p.m. It's a great opportunity on this rainy evening to enjoy some Butternut Squash Ginger soup and look at some great photographs. More details:

The 24 ultrachrome digital prints by Youngna Park showcase two series reflecting the varying social and physical landscapes of Brooklyn. The first, "yellowcard portraits," samples local Williamsburg residents and visitors on a weekend morning, subjects to a sidewalk photography experiment exchanging candy canes for their portraits. The second displays the interaction between a group of friends, momentarily posing in one of the dark, gutted, and decrepit spaces within our own neighborhoods that might go unknown to most passerby unless intentionally made into part of the social landscape.

2005_03_artsmouthstofeed.jpgIf you live in Manhattan and don't feel like sloshing through the rain to an outer burrough then maybe you should head over to the last Epochs show for quite some time. Gothamist loves the Epochs, and is sad they won't be around here while they record their new album, yet we're happy they're recording a new album. Happy, sad, happy, sad. Ah, the duality of Gothamist.

Details: tonight at 9:30pm or 10pm at Nublu [62 Ave. C] Cost is only $5. [via FreeNYC]

If you're adventurous, you could even do both! Just bring a good umbrella...

Local photoblogger [and gothamist contributor]...

Yes, Youngna is a Gothamist contributor! But we loved her before she came aboard.

"Other conflicts of interest

Individual bloggers for the Gothamist families are discouraged from writing about things related to their professional lives (e.g., writing about a new Virgin MegaStore offer if the blogger pulls in a pay check from Virgin), but sometimes editorial interest may cause occasional overlaps. If that becomes the case, the blogger has an obligation to disclose the professional relationship."

So it is not a conflict of interest worth disclosure for Younga (who I enjoy reading by the way) to write a positive review of an establishment (2/17/05 - interesting quote: "Phillips also advertised for photographs and finally selected a series of urban landscapes and texturally rich c-prints, currently on display.") that gives her a show a month later?

Is it not a conflict because she did not write this post? Even if the business relationship between she and Landscape Cafe is not quid pro quo it still needs to be disclosed.

Hi Ryan,
If you would like to read why the photographs were selected for exhibition, please read the owner Tim Phillips' blog: http://free_as_a_bird.typepad.com/landscape_with_trolls/2005/03/she_makes_the_w.html

You're welcome to come to the opening tonight, as all are invited.

p.s. my name is spelled "youngna"

Youngna, I apologize for my misspelling. I don't mean this as an attack on you at all - as I said, I enjoy your posts. I don't know that there is was any impropriety invloved in your selection (and I'm sorry I can't read the link, but it does not display on this computer) but you must admit that there is enough of a relationship to warrent disclosure. It looks like the post is trying to hide something otherwise. I would think that if a reader were a fan of gothamist, and specifically your food posts, that your relationship would be a selling point.

It is frustrating that the response to this and the daylo post concern about disclosure is defensive - as if I (or the other readers) had some problem with you or daylo. I suppose I would take offense if someone implied that I didn't deserve a show, but the whole point of disclosure is to address the issue yourself. It's basic journalism.

I hate to say it, but ryan's got a point! I know it's not done maliciously, but you guys are awfully sloppy. Why not say "Gothamist author Youngna Park" in the first place? Why not make it clear that you might be connected somehow to the places you talk about and the events you promote? It's not so bad to do that, but it looks bad if you aren't clear about it!

When you fail to provide disclosures, it hurts your credibility. If one of my friends told me to go buy something, and then I found out later he made a profit off of that recommendation (made money from an investment, got some publicity, received a kickback/commission, etc.) and he DIDN'T MENTION IT, then I wouldn't trust his recommendations anymore. Get it?

You might claim that this isn't a pro site (you have in the past) so it's not necessary, but that only means that you're putting your own personal butts on the line instead of the Gothamist brand. That's even worse.

People who read Gothamist know who Youngna is - and know that she's good at what she does. Feel free to promote her, but be clear that she's a friend and site contributor when you do. It's good practice.

first off, no one is "making a profit" from recommending youngna's event that was tonight. secondly, i wrote this post and i've probably met youngna about 3 times - so it's not like i'm pushing my best friends event on the readers. i love her work and wanted to mention it. i agree that, while it's somewhat irrelevant, mentioning that youngna is a contributer here could be a good thing to do and i'll definitely keep that in mind in the future. but let's be honest, you all would have commented like this no matter what was said.
anyway - go see the epochs - they're really good and i swear they don't write for this website.

ultimately the buck stops with me and jen, and we've talked about posts like this. in general, our feeling is that unless the exhibition/show/event/etc is of general interest to our readers, we shouldn't post it, regardless of whether the person behind it is a gothamist contributor or not. that's why we have the policies quoted above.

of course, we are bound to know more about things that we are involved in than things we are not involved in, so there will always be some sort of bias- but we are aware of this issue and have taken steps to correct it.

i actually went to youngna's show tonight- it was excellent, and worth checking out, especially if you are in the area already.

weird title. i thought it was about the bar ("Brooklyn Social") on Smith Street. that place is definitely worthy of a post.

//let's be honest, you all would have commented
//like this no matter what was said.

I can't speak for the others, but I generally don't object to this sort of stuff. The lack of disclosure nonwithstanding, it wasn't inappropriate or offtopic - it's relevant because it's a photo exhibition. As a matter of fact, I would have went if it were not for my nearly-depleted supply of clean clothes. Perhaps some other time. It was nice of you to mention it.

I agree that, no matter what you post, there's probably someone bored on the Internet who will rip you a new one just for being an author making a recommendation. I agree that it's unfair to draw impolite criticism like that, and I'm sorry that you deal with that on a constant basis. (I see all the comments; I know this posting week is starting off with a bang, eh? This isn't even the first time today!) I wasn't myself looking to jump down anyone's back - I'm sorry if it looked that way.

Criticism can't be avoided entirely, but style counts in trying to minimize it. Editorial errors and ommissions can be fixed. Voice and intent counts for a lot more (those are in the right place).

That all said, anyone who's been around a while will remember this time last year, when Gothamist did an absurd and hilarious fake interview with Amanda Hesser. At that time, we learned Gothamist can really dish it out to others regarding errors in disclosure. Sorta makes you guys fair game, right? (heh)

The opening was last night but the photos will stay up for the next month so if anyone is in the neighborhood, please do stop by and see them, Gothamist-recommended or not. :)
