More "What's the Deal with...?": The Walkers on the Tweed Courthouse Steps

Now that we've squared away Union Square and the Jetson building, what's the deal with those walking people on the steps of the Tweed Courthouse? They walk, but they never get anywhere? Is it a metaphor for the Department of Education, housed inside? -Tim

First, hee.

Tweed Courthouse steps

Actually, as you probably suspected, the walking people are part of an art installation by Julian Opie (whose work can be seen throughout City Hall Park until this October). There are booklets available at City Hall with more information on the exhibit.

You can see more photos at Julian's really awesome website. And Gothamist's own Tien Mao visited recently.

It would be cooler if they were moonwalking. But I like them alot.

i really like the web site.

  • Lux

I think they are SO UGLY. I hate them.

  • It's subliminal programming- think along the lines of "walk away from here; there is nothing to see" so your attention is distracted from the despicable Department of Edjamucation buearocrazies.

"Julian's really awesome website"? Are you kidding me? Methinks that thing was built using twigs and gum.

I'll take quick navigation over pseudo-creativity any day (Mac imitation? Come on).

In my last job, I could see the walkers from my office window and I LOVE them. After you look at them for a minute or two, they are strangely soothing.

  • Hey, thanks for answering my note! Does this mean one can actually *enter* City Hall to find out more info?

    I guess that's another question.

    Thanks again.
