Another Day, Another Subway Track Fire

2005_03_subwayfire.jpgA subway track fire in Brooklyn jammed up the 2, 3, 4 and 5 trains this morning. WNBC reported that the Atlantic Avenue station needed to be evacuated at 7AM, and the subways were suspended for two hours. The MTA called the following delays "residual delays," which is much nicer than saying "You're going to be waiting on the platform with lots of people who are getting more and more annoyed...they'll start to mutter and shift and then try to squeeze into the train car before you can." Gothamist had to wait about 20 minutes before a 2 or 3 train appeared (the local was nowhere to be seen either); we admit we did bad by holding the NY Times in our hands, as if we'd even be able to read it - instead, we just smushed against others and got newsprinty.

People! The problem would be solved once we start paying $3 per ride! It's all our fault!

And the cause of the fire? Shoot, does anyone here actually use the Atlantic Avenue station? That place is renovated and crap at the same time. A maze of stairs and tracks and seemingly constantly under construction. And that's the equivalent of Times Square in Brooklyn!

Let's have one more major fire so the state and the city can shake up the stupid MTA once and for all.

Wow, Sucks to be the MTA.

Lately, they can't seem to get a break...

Maybe with the $710 million from the West Side Yard sale, MTA can finally install sprinklers in the substations.

I was curious about what was causing all these fires in the subway [average is 4 / day]. Found this on google: Fragile Subway System. Interesting read.

is anyone going to mention that the A and C were out AGAIN due to a "police investigation" so we were told to use the 1, along with the rest of the west side...add that to the 2/3 confusion and what a nightmare.
