don't look at it as a homage to classic diners, look at it as an update. Tuna melts and dishwater coffee were to classic workaday diner patrons what polenta and "grilled bread topped with olives, sauteed broccoli raab and drizzled with a olive oil" are to today's wburg yupsters. Its soul-food for the white-belt trust-fund set. Plus, its tasty as hell.

Good review, but sounds like you fell hard for the "simple diner" image. I've never seen "marinated porcini mushrooms and roasted duck served over fried polenta" at a diner, nor "grilled bread topped with olives, sauteed broccoli raab and drizzled with a olive oil." And I'm pretty sure a dining car in the 20s would have nothing at all in common with this place. I'm sure the food was good, but the false nostalgia and co-optation of real diners is annoying (on their part, not yours).
