Not Such Sweet Revenge

A middle-aged man, drunk out of his mind causes a ruckus in a small police station, tearing up the place and abusing the police officers. When his friend finally comes to bail him out, the two step out of the rain and into a payphone to call the drunk man's daughter for her birthday. But when the friend turns away for just a moment, the man has disappeared.

So begins one of the most highly anticipated foreign film releases this year, Park Chan-Wook's OldBoy. Winner of the Grand Prix at last year's Cannes Film Festival, OldBoy follows the drunk man, Oh Dae-su (Choi Min-sik), who wakes up to find himself imprisoned in what seems to be a hotel room. When he's finally released 15 years later, pissed as hell and ready to enact his revenge, he comes to realize the question isn't "who locked him up" but "why'd they let him go."

This is one of those movies like Memento or Irreversible that the cineastes in your world will be rabidly debating around the watercooler. That's why Gothamist is tickled to offer five of our readers seats at an advance screening this Friday, March 18 before the film's New York release on the 25th. In the meantime, check out the trailer and stay tuned for more details on how to enter the contest. [Note: The contest go live later; 5 winners will get two guaranteed tickets (no waiting in line) each to an 8PM screening on Friday, 3/18].

Oh, for God's sake! I thought this was a news story at first!

This movie looks great. Though I think the Angelika will be the only place to see it. This is not so great, since the Angelika has the worst site lines, projection, sound, and seating in all of NYC.

Rose,
I agreed with you. Drunken guy caused ruckus in a police station and was let go without a beatdown?

You get it that late? The movie is already out on video here in Germany!

You can get this film for $10 in Chinatown. Great movie!

The film is also playing at the EMPIRE 25 in TIMES SQUARE... see it on the big screen it is a must!

As a Korean-American, I think that Korean culture is wacko: full of suppressed aggression, with the men unable to relate in any sensitive way with women, an obsession with money and other gimmicks (as a way to avoid relating to people.)
