Lower East Side Shooting Prompted By Goading and Happiness

One of the teens involved in the shooting of Nicole duFresne told police that duFresne was targeted because she and her friends looked happy. It seems that Ashley Evans and another female were being bothered by the guys in the groups about the girls didn't "fight or do anything." The NY Times has details about her statement:
"I then initiated the next action by saying, 'The next person I see, I'm just going to hit them,'" Ms. Evans said, according to the statement.

At that point, the group spotted Ms. duFresne; her fiancé, Jeffrey Sparks; and another couple. They had come from a nearby bar, where they celebrated Ms. duFresne's new job at a local nightclub.

"They were extremely happy, so that made me even angrier," Ms. Evans said in the statement.

This story just gets sadder and sadder. Anyway, Evans's statement said that her boyfriend Rudy Fleming's gun went off accidentally after duFresne confronted him, but the police still think the shooting was intentional.

Another act of senseless violence: A Guyanese immigrant was beaten to death in Richmond Hill (another NYC neighborhood where violence is rare) by a teenager on drugs. Gothamist on the Nicole duFresne murder.

help me. i've read this sentence several times and still can't make sense of it.

  • I have to agree, I wonder who "helped" her write it?
I'm thinking the DA and/or the defense attorney ghostwrote it.

You have to figure that at this point, they're working on a plea bargain, and it's in both sides' interest to paint the incident as an act of passion and not a robbery attempt as first reported.

That would get them down from first degree murder to second degree, or even voluntary manslaughter. This "confession" would make it easier for the DA to sell the plea bargain to the public, wouldn't it?

What do lawyers and Law & Order viewers think?

Ugh, enough with this bitch. Nobody cares.

  • This reminds me of another series of senseless acts which took place in New York and perpetuated by female teenagers. Remember the girls who would go about sticking straight pins into total strangers for kicks???

...and what about the kooks who push people off NYC platforms in front of oncoming subways?

and they talk about Los Angeles!

"I then initiated the next action by saying..." that sounds very natural for a teenager, huh?

In any case, IMO, She's still guilty.

Weather the gun went off "accidently" or not the little jackass should not have been pointing a gun at someone.

    Gun in hand = intent
