Ok, So You're Broke. You Can Still Eat.

And you want to spend your limited funds on a few drinks with friends, but that doesn't mean you can't eat or need to limit yourself to instant ramen noodles. This week's New York Magazine surveys bars around town where you can take advantage of free food during happy hour. And although much of it seems somewhat standard (hot dogs, wings, pizza), there were a few standouts that seemed more interesting to our palates and our wallets:

The Blind Tiger Ale House pairs up with Murray's Cheese every Wednesday at 6 p.m., offering free cheese tastings with beer pairings, and on weekends at 1 p.m. they provide a bagel brunch. As for drinks, their weekday happy hour from noon to 8 p.m. features a Brooklyn “draft of the day” for $3.50. 518 Hudson Street, at W. 10th Street, 212-675-3848.

O’Flaherty’s, a traditional Irish bar in midtown, provides a real, hearty meal -- Sunday through Wednesday the kitchen provides free pasta in marinara sauce as it closes down around 10:30 p.m. And while you're waiting, you can fill up on $3 pints of Budweiser from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. 334 W. 46th Street, between Eighth and Ninth Avenues, 212-581-9366.

And for the more health conscious among us, the bar at Boxers features wire egg trees filled with hard-boiled eggs. They're yours free of charge from 4 p.m. to 4 a.m., and if you get there on the early side, beer, wine and well drinks ($5-$6), are two for one from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the bar. 190 W. 4th Street, between Sixth Avenue and Barrow Street, 212-206-7526.

Can't leave off Rodeo Bar on 27th & 3rd... Free Peanuts all night long and during Happy Hour free Nachos and Wings (at least on Fridays)

  • Well, here's a good reason why I should slow down when I read NY Magazine.

(Honestly, it's about time I subscribed...)

  • The NY Mag piece mentions both the Alligator Lounge and Rudy's. I definitely think a trip to the Alligator for free pizza is worth the $4 in round-trip subway fare!

    Nice.

hopefully lots more people will go to the Tiger on Wed! It certainy isn't crowded enough already!

    sheesh...

honestly though, I wouldn't recomend going on Wed to anyone unless they were REALLY into beer, it gets crazy and is extremely uncomfortable untill about 10PM (the cheese/bbread is gone by 7 or 7:30 most times). Not for the faint of heart...

Come on, guys! Gotta know about the Alligator Lounge in Williamsburg... a FREE PIZZA for every drinker! I mean, a whole personal pizza! Just for ordering a $3.50 Yuengling! (And, hell, at that price, the Yuengling itself is a bargain)

My fellow Manhattanites, don't bitch and moan about having to take the L train... it's at the second stop in Brooklyn, not even 100 yards from the subway entrance. Some things are worth going outer-borough-hopping for.

  • don't forget rudy's. free hotdogs and popcorn!
