Do You Like it Wet and Nasty?

accuwx_022805.jpgAfter several days of uncertainty, forecasters have now settled on snow mixed with sleet for today. Lots of snow. Quickly. This is going to be a "wham bam thank you ma'am" storm. Did Gothamist mention it is going to be windy? Yep, expect gusts of 40 mph or more.

The snow has reached Atlantic City and should be upon us this afternoon. For once the Weather Service is calling for more snow (6-10 inches) than AccuWeather (2-6 inches).

One note of caution, as the Weather Service pointed out early this morning, "bust potential is there... and day crew will have to refine..." This is a complicated storm and the forecaster is acknowledging two things: the storm is going to zoom up the coast, and the storm is very narrow. If the center of low pressure comes closer inland we'll wind up with rain, if it wanders further off the coast than expected we'll get even more snow. Just think, Spring is but three weeks away!

I meant to say "wet and messy" but I guess my subconscious is even more in the gutter than that!

I couldn't agree with you more KP. The rain/snow line has been about 50-60 miles offshore all day. Even a small observational error could throw this forecast off.

  • AWESOME HEADLINE! didn't think anything could make me laugh at the weather at this point, but that did :-)

  • that is one dirty title...

Welcome back J-Dog. I was prepping a snip for this badboy but glad you got to it first. I'll just add the following.

I heard people at work today mention that originally they ("the weather people") were forecasting 15 inches, then they dropped it to 4, now they are saying 6-10. "They don't have a clue." They said. They don't know.

It's easy to make this claim but what's really happening is 1) Mother nature will do whatever the **** she wants to do regardless of what the "weather people" do. 2) "The weather people" have lots of fancy "computer" equipment that is constantly analyzing the weather variables and predicting odds for every possible outcome. 3) "The weather people" revise their public statements and forecasts based on the changing information in order to more accurately inform the public.

The NWS just spent an a**load of money on new computer equipment to help make forecasting more precise as well. No longer just zone forecasts, now they can truly get local.

So miss "no clue" talking too loud in the next aisle of cubes... we'll see if that lovely karma you're spreading brings you a step in a slushy puddle on the way home tonight... ("quotations" used by permission)
