The New York Botanical Gardens' annual Orchid Show opens tomorrow, and it might be the perfect thing to stave off the winter blahs. Thousands of brilliant orchids will be on display throughout the conservatories, and the NYBG has many tours and demonstrations planned throughout the show, which ends March 27.
Admissions for adults is $15; photography requires a $35 pass and is only allowed on Tuesdays (we suppose it's to keep the crowds moving, but we're sure cameraphones will be taking stealth pics). A good read to get you in the mood might be The Orchid Thief, which spawned Adaptation, which was more about Hollywood screenwriting and a little less on orchids, but it's a fitting flick for this Oscar weekend. And Gothamist enjoyed visiting the NYBG for the Holiday Train Show.

This is probably THE greatest event in the history of New York. Possibly the world. And Maybe, just MAYBE the Universe. Forget the Gates and possibly getting the 2012 Olympics Games.
We gotta go see the Orchid Show everyone. Get your Camera's and your Wallets, and shell out those 15 to get in and an extra 20 bucks to take pictures.
I wouldn’t be so Sarcastic if it was 10 bucks for everyone.
You have to PAY to take pictures? They are worried about keeping the crowds moving? How many people come to this thing? Wouldn't the NYBG want people to take their time looking at the flowers?
I would think whoever is bored / old enough to want to see this would take their SWEET F-IN time. I would pay to see a confrontation between two floral enthusists over this issue.
the orchid theme in the film 'secretary' is also nice to get you in the mood.
About 70,000 people over four weeks, and virtually all of them on the weekends. It's a madhouse. But also, unsarcastically one of the most brilliant public events in New York City. If you are the least bit cynical, I dare you to go and not be blown away.
