Hooray For Jay: The Project Runway Finale

One of Gothamist's addictions, Project Runway, aired its finale last night, allowing us to sleep better knowing that evil (and ugly) and good (and boring) were soundly defeated by the fun, crazy and exciting! Jay McCarroll, giving little towns in Pennsylvania a good name, beat Kara Saun, the poised costume designer, and Wendy Pepper, the "mom from Virginia" and villainess of the show, and Gothamist couldn't be happier.

Jay's runway collection was an explosion of color - a little overwhelming, but still, a lot of great, interesting pieces (the detailing on this sweater is sweet, and the final dress was great). Kara's collection was sexy and beautifully put together, but, as Michael Kors said, it was too Gucci (and if Gothamist can see that, then there are problems). Wendy's collection was all right - skillfully tailored, but pretty ugly. Gothamist does applaud Bravo's chutzpah for making sure Wendy's wispy-voiced daughter pulled our heartstrings, though. As for Kara's and Wendy's futures, we can only imagine they will have more success: Kara because she's skilled and Wendy because she's a character.

So, it's auf wiedersehen to Heidi Klum and the gang. We hope that the fashion spread in Elle and $100,000 in seed money to start a clothing line will help put Jay's clothes on our backs (or at least on our wish lists). And it looks like the show's renewal is up in the air though, given the
Weinsteins split with Miramax come September. Perhaps it's a blessing, since it's hard to do "reality" twice.

What did you think of Project Runway?

Loved it! Smart and interesting reality TV - Finally! Just so sad it's over. I was a Kara Saun fan up until last night, when her whole shoe situation got a little sketchy. And I would have rather seen her rise above Wendy's overt attempts at confrontation. Loved her clothes, but Jay definitely has got the "it" factor. Please, Bravo, Renew Project Runway!

One of my best experiences with reality TV. Mainly due to the fact that I watched the entire shows run in the space of a few lazy days (weekend Bravo marathon and late last night. But I like any show where people make things, be they motorcycles, houses or (now) clothes. IMHO I think that is the underlying appeal of these shows. And yea for Jay- he was the best and KS definately was shown to be a wanker by the end. Good show- they should keep doing it- maybe with Parson's students next time.

Max, I agree - when there's a level of craft involved, it makes the contestants and show more interesting. Because I have no idea how to make clothes (or build a house or fix a motorcycle), I've been sucked into Project Runway. And I think Kara's designs are lovely, but maybe too safe.

My favorite show as of late/Wednesday night addiction. So sad it's over! I'm totally happy that Jay won; Wendy is a tailor, not a fashion designer, and Kara Saun, though talented, skirted the rules and is definitely more geared toward glitzy Hollywood/award shows than the fashion/haut couture world. I am, however, quite dissapointed that we saw Wendy instead of Austin's final collection. I know that Austin's would have been full of puffy femmy frew frew things, but they're so fun to look at! :)

I enjoyed the show very much. A lot of the guys had a thing for Alexandria but I thought Nora was cuter. But that's just me. I haven't seen the finale yet but I'm just glad Wendy didn't win. Go Jay!

I thought Kara Saun should have won. She won four challenges throughout the show (to Jays none) and her collection was (to me) the best. Jays was the most original, yes, but his was not as perfectly executed as Kara's. I love, love, LOVE Jay, but I think the wrong person won last night. But, no matter, Kara will go far. She is obviosly talented an I see her designing Oscar gowns for stars on day.

I loved Project Runway. Austin and Kara Saun were my faves, I was blown away when Nancy "For the love of God, WHY are you famous" O'Dell picked Wendy's dress. Total fluke. Austin should have been one of the last three. And I thought Kara Saun should have won, but I think she's got more potential of being recruited by a designer to work for. Jay is more unique and probably needs the means to start his own thing. He's a doll!

the finale was great: gotta love the catfights, and jay's commentary is always entertaining. between the three, i think the judges made the right decision with jay because, like lisa, i was all for kara saun up until the last-minute shady shoe business, which was kind of a shame.

Wendy is underrated!!!
Yes, she doesn't have the experience of Kara PassiveAgressiveHolierThanThou Saun, but Wendy listened to Tim's criticism and took it to heart. Wendy's designs are for an older (less fashion-obessed) crowd, but to her credit they are definitely more saleable than KaraPSHTTSaun's hot pink leather and fur dominatrix outfit.
Give credit where credit is due -- Wendy makes clothes that will SELL. They won't sell to the NYC Fashionista crowd, but they will SELL.

Come on, Wendy is totally overrated as it is..
Her clothes are as fugly as her personality. If she had won Project Runway, then you know the show would have been fixed for pure drama. I don't know who her customer base is, older women with no style I suppose, who live in umm.. small town Virginia or some boondocks area like that.. You don't need to be part of NYC fashion crowd to see that her clothes are pure ugliness and ill fitted. Her gimmick of "I'm a mother" is done, get over it, having a kid doesn't mean squat as every human is capable of that. Jay and Kara Suan at least have natural talent for the craft, not just about waving around a pair of scissors.

Only half of the human race can claim the "motherhood" mantle. Actually about 51% of the world population- I smell a mandate!
;)

come ON. first of all, tim and michael freakin' kors kept telling her to use the mom thing. blame her for following their instructions? don't think so. and i just love hearing all the wendy-haters going on and on about "old women." give me a break. she's 40, not 80. ageism, much? wendy's styles were lovely. not my personal taste, but hey, neither was kara saun's, frankly. waaaaay too much fussiness and "haughty"/haute-couture going on there for this girl, but - whatever. chacun a son gout. frankly, if anything, kara needed a little *more* bringing down before she went. that was the most blatant display of hypocrisy and passive-aggressiveness (not to mention pure nastiness) i've seen since junior high. all because wendy had the guts to say what every single one of them were thinking - "kevin, you're a great guy, but a leader? not so much, no." at this point, i'm over this show. it was fun. now, be gone.

it was like going back to art school for me. the creative challenges, the ridiculous deadlines, the competition. and even tho i was banking on Kara Saun until the last episode (oh, those shoes were SO cheating), i loved that Jay won. his stuff looked great, the concept was there, and he definitely got the most press coming out of fashion week... YAAAAY, JAY!

well, frankly, when they brought parker posey in as the last judge (looked great, btw!) you knew jay would win, which was ok with me. Of course, who knows if her vote actually COUNTED, but anyway... aufweidersehen!

Ding dong the witch is dead. Wendy was pure evil. You can see the seething devil in her eyes when ANYONE criticizes her. Yes, she took Tim's notes to heart...but to her cavernous, black heart. Did you see the way she was looking at him?! Yes, her daughter was cute...but you would be too if you had to vye for your mothers love every moment of the day!!! Sure, she may have been ballsy in coming out and saying things...but to what advantage? The reason I loved this show so much was because the actual "outings" weren't based on the backstage bitchiness but on the actual product. So coniving wasn't a factor. The only strategy that affected the vote was stuff said on the runway. Who was the only one who chose to speak up on the runway? Witchy/bitchy wendy. "Ugh, I hate Wendy"

Wendy was easy for the rest of the contestants to gang up on: she was older, from an uncool suburban place, a mom, and interested in winning a competition (which is what a reality show is, normal designers do not compete on game shows for professional opportunities). She was also the most professional (as in show up on time, follow instructions, learn and adapt when needed) of the contestants. There was only one thing wrong with her- she was there to work and learn, not join the cool kids club or impress everyone with how unique she was.

Jay deserved to win based on his amazing final collection, it was clearly superior. Wendy's work was not as good.

But I just don't get the venom for Wendy. She "betrayed" Kevin? How? By giving a fairly gentle critique of his bad leadership? Didn't the judges say the EXACT SAME THING when the contestants were in the ready room? Which is meaner- saying someone is a poor leader or telling your competitor you hate them and they have no soul every week for two months, then refusing to speak to them or even make eye contact with them.

Kara Saun is full of shit with her 2nd grade antics, and she's a cheater to boot. What a class act. Oh, and copying the production designer for "The Aviator" is not original design work, it's lazy. Wendy's stuff was ugly, but she actually designed it.

I'm from Virginia and Wendy was a total bitch! She should never show her ugly face in VA ever again. Yeah, 40 ain't old, but he taste is very frumpy. Most of the fashionable women I know in DC would never let Wendy design a dress for them. She is NOT a designer. She can make dresses and she designs outfits from "Easy To Sew" McCall patterns. That's the extent of her limited talent. She "played" the game that she played because she knows that she doesn't have the talent that Jay or Kara Saun has. I, too, was disappointed in Kara Saun and the shoe thing, but I loved her designs. I think she should step out of the box more with her designs. But there is no question that she is very talented. Jay is very whimiscal and I loved the "Stereotype" theme he did on the runway with the headphones. I was actually routing for Jay or Kara to win. They are both talented people and I suspect that you will here about them in the future. But as for fugly ass Wendy...she is talentless and she has no class.

BTW...she drew to mustache on her daughter's picture to draw some sympathy!

The problem I had with Wendy is she had no style. She listened far to much from Tim and Michael and didn't bring anything of her own to the show nor her designs. That's what makes her a tailor, she can implement other people's ideas but lacks her own.

With the way she was portrayed on the show, I would love to see a 'Where Are They Now' series on these contestants next year. I still see her cranking out stuff from the basement where as Kara Saun either works for a major designer or has a couple of pieces commissioned from wealthy benefactors.

To Wendy's credit, her kid is cute! But Bravo did edit her crying and having a nervous breakdown way too much. You have to keep your cool and that's what Jay did. He's a character and I'm glad he won.

Those designers were all nuts. It was great tv!!!!! Favorite line from that Vanessa (fake Brit accent chick)to Wendy: "we feel bad for you because you're a Mom from the middle of nowhere"
This, coming from a woman whose "Envy" project was a maternity dress? Therapy time!

Regarding Wendy:

1. Badmouthing where she is from or what she looks like just reinforces the idea that the problem is that she is an untraditional designer, not that her work is bad. Which it isn't- she won challenges. The judges mostly liked her work.

2. If you have so much natural talent that you don't need to "play games", why are you on a GAME SHOW to advance your career? Just like really successful businesspeople do not need to 'audition' for a fake Donald Trump job, naturally talented designers find their way into the business without playing games on Bravo. That being said, if you are going to play, play to win.

3. Kara Saun has the most professional experience of all the contestants- she is already a working costume designer. She lost, badly, to a much younger amateur from the middle of nowhere. What does that tell you? It tells me she is already at the professional limit of what she can achieve. If she has a Music/Hollywood clientele that loves her work so much, why haven't they invested in her yet? Because she isn't worth it. Wendy and Jay are just UNDISCOVERED, a big difference.

4. Wendy has style- middle American style. That's why she could not win and why she finds such disfavor. I guess the answer was to be smarter than Tim and Michael Kors. But, if you are better than Tim and Michael, again, why go on a game show? Wendy clearly learned the most. There are all different kinds of fashion. There is a big market for Wendy's work. It isn't high fashion, but sometimes that's OK. The reason it appeared that she had no ideas is that her ideas were not in line with what was expected of the high fashion world. She's inexperienced, not dumb.

5. If I had to pick who would be the most successful later on, I would pick Austin. He was really creative but did not do well with the fakey and artificial 'challenges'.

Ahhh Kara Nut (AKA "cares not")...holding a mean spirited silent treatment grudge for 5 months, then interpreting the rules to your advantage with your designer shoes.

Austin's American look on the Bravo site was classic & buyable.Wendy's sheer blouse made the crowd blush, & Jay should be the successor to Joan Rivers on the red carpet if his stuff doesn't survive after Elle. Can't wait for the next challenge.

I'm thrilled that Jay won, his collection was amazing.

I was disappointed in Kara's final shoe stunt and I wonder if it wasn't ultimately held against her?

I still believe Kevin drew on Wendy's daughters picture. Kara once described Kevin as passive/aggressive and that was a totally p/a move. I don't think Kevin had the nerve to admit the truth at the shows taping but I wish he would admit it now.

hated the dumb headphones on jay's models.

God I loved this show, I never missed any episodes, was so addicted.
I abslolutely was ecstatic when Jay won, he totally deserved to win, he has talent, style and as great personalilty to boot, even with his passive agressive bouts here and there. I was so happy when Kara Saun didnt win. She totally turned me off with her immature attitude towards Wendy. Wendy was mistreated unfairly by the other competitors.... They really ganged up on her and turned her into a scapegoat, I really like the fact that towards the end Jay kinda softened a bit in her direction itgave me new respect for my flamboyant friend...
Kara saun, god what an immature little high and mighy bitch, was so relieved when she didnt win.
I thought it was totally funny when Wendys mom showed up and she was out smoking with jay, his facial expressions just killed me, you go jay, what a gas.... that s what happened to wendy, if I had a mom like her, well, it seemed like she was a complete alky, by her attitude,
anyway, back to the fashions, Jay was just superb, he once again pulled it off, Kara saun was so predictable with her leather and fur.... boring boring boring, although she does have some talent, and Wendy, I was suprised, because, yes my dear Kara saun, wendy does have talent, she is not, into the new crazy ideas but her look was nice and the clothes, well hey, I would buy them.....
too bad that austin wasnt in the winning group, would kick out kara saun and put him in, I guess her funky little immature, I am not talking to you, really got to me, what a bitch, really grow up, and wendy is right, that is quite crazy to stay in a room with someon and not speak to that other person, just plain childish and not to mention, I am sure it kept the tension up.... GROW UP..
Great Show btw, I hope that Jay takes advantage of his winnings and opens up his own shop, you go Jay,btw, I would love to jump his bones, his great personality, with some wild and crazy lovn would drive a woman or man nuts...
anyway, just my opinion
Us libras kinda like live outside of the lines, as jay is a libra as well, we are the coolest of the star signs, I hate to say, but is the truth!!
Heidi in Seattle :)

I'm glad Jay won. I'd been rooting for Austin, but since he didn't make it, I turned to Kara. Then I was appalled by Kara Saun's stupid little "I'm not talking to you" middle-school additude. I completely turned to Jay after the shoe thing.
And I'm glad I did. I absolutely loved his stuff.

I was wondering if Bravo will repeat these shows, especially the last one, because I watched all of them & missed the very last one.
I just have to see the last show!
Thanks.
