Sell Outs

2005_02_artsraylamontagne.jpgWe'll have a full list of April and May shows coming up soon, there are A LOT to cover. We find it somehow comforting that we're already buying tickets for shows in the springtime ... we're ready to thaw! Moving on, so as not to repeat ourselves here is last month's sell outs list which has tickets that are still on sale for upcoming shows. And as for the below list we have starred the shows that have a high risk factor of Hilary Duff being in attendance, consider this a public service.

*-KRock is putting on a show at Rothko (they must be trying to gain some indie cred), however the shows headliners are the Bravery. Seems like the perfect pairing, that's all we're sayin'. Tickets on sale here, only $9.23, how clever.
-Lou Barlow at Mercury Lounge March 1st
-Tsunami Relief Concert featuring the Fever, Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Natural History, Blue Sparks and Demetri Martin @ Crash Mansion March 3rd
-Clem Snide @ Bowery March 5th
*-Secret Machines @ Irving Plaza March 6th [March 5th sold out already]
-VHS or Beta @ Bowery March 8th
-Death From Above 1979 and controller.controller @ Bowery March 10th
-Brazilian Girls @ Bowery March 16th
*-Kaiser Chiefs and Morningwood @ Bowery March 25th
-Regina Spektor @ Bowery March 30th
-(The OC approved) the Album Leaf at Mercury Lounge March 31st
-The Album Leaf & Bloodthirsty Lovers @ Northsix April 1st
-Ray Lamontagne [pictured] @ Webster Hall April 3rd [April 2nd show already sold out]
-Fiery Furnaces @ Northsix April 7th
-Tori Amos @ Hammerstein April 8th
-Fiery Furnaces @ Webster Hall April 9th
-M83 and Ulrich Schnauss @ Bowery April 13th and April 14th
Heads up on these late April shows:
-Bob Dylan @ Beacon Theater April 25, 26, 28, 29, 30
-New York Dolls @ Irving April 28th

*sigh* and the Blue Scholars never made it closer than Philly.

Heads up for May: Snow Patrol will be at Roseland May 20

some names aside, that is the worst list of craptacular indie hipster bands i've ever seen next to the lineup at coachella.

WTF?! Where is Sleater-Kinney? They're playing at Mercury next week.

settle down, that show is sold out already. what would be the point in listing a sold out show in a post about tickets to buy before they sell out?

ummm, trail of dead?!?!? only one of the all-time greatest live bands playing two nights at IP in april

ahhhh!!! why do you keep alerting the masses to these fine gigs before those of us who have to pool our financial resources in order to buy our tickets have a chance to do so? I mean, cheers for promoting the music, but JEEZ! as if the competition for tix isn't fierce enough for some of these shows...

Try ohmyrockness.com, okay JK?

Don't forget all the rising UK/European bands who will play here mid-March on their way to SXSW:

Maximo Park, maybe the best new band in England. Not overhyped... yet. Recommended if you like mid-'80s stuff like Smiths/Wedding Present. March 14 at Mercury Lounge (with NIne Black Alps, also UK)/March 15 at Rothko with Hot Chip. No advance tickets for either show.

Goldie Lookin' Chain, Welsh rappers -- a whole band of Ali Gs, with songs like "Your Mom Has a Penis." They were a minor sensation in England last year. March 14 at Mercury Lounge.

CRUNCHY FROG showcase: Crunchy Frog is the Danish label that gave us The Ravoenettes and Junior Senior (who played a similar showcase at the Merc two years ago). This time it's shoegazers EPO-555, and a band called Powersolo who like they might be really rediculous and fun. This label signs no bad bands.

The Go! Team, who are like the Avalanches as played by a marching band. March 21 at Mercury Lounge (sold out)/ March 22 at Southpaw.

Mylo, Scotland's answer to Daft Punk. March 23 at Rothko.

I Am Kloot are playing a slew of shows in mid-March. Acoustic-oriented, but great songs. Their second, self-titled album just got a belated US release (I prefer their first album, Natural History, but both are good). March 8 at Mercury Lounge w/ Stars and Apollo of Hustle (sold out); March 10 at Pianos; March 11 at Southpaw.

i'm a little shocked to check back to the comments section of this blog entry to find that my comment was deleted.

i understand that gothamist has a policy regarding comments (clipped below).

however, i did posted using my name, and while my post had a somewhat negative tone -- i didn't understand why a large handful of very cool shows wasn't listed -- i am shocked that you felt the need to delete my post. my post had a lot of information in it that people might want.

also, if gothamist is so thin-skinned that criticism, constructive or otherwise -- including opinions -- is not acceptable, then i'm losing my interest and faith in you.

from the tone of gothamist, i thought this was a place of exchange and information. i had no idea that gothamist would feel compelled to delete anything with a semblance of criticism.

it's really too bad. gothamist used to be so much better than this. hmmm. the 15 minutes are tick tocking.

Bad Comments

Bad comments insult the writer of the post, other commenters, Gothamist, other websites, etc.

Bad comments go off on tangents or go-off topic, and often contain spam or spam-like content.
Bad comments are almost always anonymous, and usually contain fake contact information, because negative commenters are almost always too cowardly to stand behind their opinions.

your comment had a very negative tone, and as you can see from our policy that you cut & pasted there - that falls under the "bad comments" section.
also, i think you were confusing the "sell outs" posts with the "weekly concert listing" posts (that coolfer used to do, and that ben now does).
this post lists a few shows that i think will actually sell out. the list you made were a lot of shows that wouldn't sell out as well as shows that were listed in our last "sell outs" post that i linked to in this post.

i appreciate your response jen. i was confusing the sell outs with weekly concert listing. why have the two different listings? this will probably seem like something negative but i'm genuninely wondering why have two separate listings.

i guess i have just noticed a real change in the coverage of music by gothamist -- and while not everyone can be as wonderful as coolfer he set a really high bar. i depended on his listings for hot tips on music i may not have know about. since he's gone i've really missed that coverage.

don't worry, i go to a lot of shows with "coolfer" and he tries to give me "hot tips" on music whenever possible. which i would post, if i wrote the weekly concert post. which i don't, ben does - and he does a great job.
here is the difference in the posts:

the weekly concert post is a post to let you know about what shows are happening that week. it's a weekly post.

this sell outs post is a post to let you know way in advance about tickets for shows that have recently gone on sale and will most definitely sell out. so that when the show date arrives you aren't left buying a ticket with your rent money on craigslist.
