Hunter S. Thompson (1937-2005)

In an interview Dr. Thompson is asked how he'd like to be remembered:

With no time to think, I blurt out my last question. How do you want to be remembered?

Remembered?

Yeah, Leary shot his ashes in to space, what are you going to do? Maybe sprinkle them on Nixon's grave?

Every once in awhile I come across a pretty good line. Let me read you the thing. Voice of my generation, a roadman for the lords of Karma, that’s my real job. Yeah. I’m a writer, and that’s what I want to be remembered as. I heard the music, and I wrote to it. Some people beat drums. Some people strum guitars. It’s all in the music you hear.

Gothamist will remember him as a writer. A fiction writer, a fact reporter, a deadline deferrer, the inventor of Gonzo Journalism and as the many other things he was to those in his life.

You can read Thompson's ESPN.com column from last Tuesday here.

How weird can it get before you just can't take it any more?

I think we all knew he was going to go out with a bang. I suspect he didn't like the way he was aging. Maybe he felt like no one was listening? Some of us were, and we still are. Hunter, you made a difference. You shovelled through all the bullshit, and actually found a way to break down politics to the "common person". You brought out the truth, you had the courage to say things most of us would be paranoid for the rest of our lives.

It must have been discouraging to see this neo-fascism emerging right under our feet. I know it pisses me off. But now we really need you, Hunter. I know that's selfish of me, but too many of our allies are disappearing.

In this foul year of our Lord, 2005, the world is going to be different without you and your writing. You said the American century is over, and man did it end abruptly. Now it is painfully obvious that America is a hoax. This empire is crumbling as I write this and our current administration says we need to bring democracy to Iraq, Iran, etc. So what happened to our so-called democracy? It's infuriating. One can see why Dr. Gonzo just couldn't take it anymore.

I loved those stories you would start telling and then go on these incredible tangents. You were one the greatest literary talents of our times. Sometimes we couldn't even understand what you were talking about. But other times you were so succinct and enlightening in your writing. You were a genius. I wish more of us had told you these things while you were still in this world. Hunter you will be missed. My condolences to your family and friends. Peace

The fact that anyone took Thompson's drug-addled blather seriously is hard to believe. This nut spent over twenty years in a total stupor and was no more insightful than some guy sleeping on a subway grate. His work wasn't just bad, it was embarrassing. He may have been upset about George Bush kicking the Democrats' asses but was probably too wasted to fully appreciate it.

yeah, nola, next to your stunning party-line insight, hunter was clearly a failure. hmmm, best-selling books, influential journalism techniques, films, an independent voice for a generation... yup that was an unproductive 20 years.

Did I say he was unproductive? No. I said he was a stupid junkie who spent twenty someodd years babbling and drooling for the suckers who took him seriously. Were you one of those suckers? Somehow I'm not surprised.

I've disagreed with HST on politics from the very first time I started reading him back in the 80's. But that is not the point. His greatest accomplishment was about punching you in the face with his words and views that made you stop and contemplate your own life and views in contrast to his....clearly a losing proposition, even if you disagreed with him.....at his core was a passion for freedom....from what or for what I dont have a clue, but he captured those vibes better than anyone....ever, and that is quite a legacy to leave....even if he didnt remember where he was from moment to moment.
