Water Main Break in Astoria

Last night's water main break that forced evacuations in a number of homes should be a lesson to everyone: Get renter's or owner's insurance. It doesn't cost that much in the long run and it's totally worth it. [Ask Gothamist on renter's insurance]

Authorities suspect that a contractor working on new homes in the area may have caused the problems. Sigh, Queens can't get a break, can it?

Does Renter Insurance come with Flood Protection? I *think* home insurance requires a 2nd Flood Insurance policy.

pretty sure renter's insurance does not cover flooding - most commercial insurance does not, either. and given that the city's water pipes break a couple hundred times a year, that's a problem.

My renter's insurance only covers water damage caused by plumbing in the building. Damage caused by broken watermains isn't covered. Check your policies, especially if you live in a basement or first-floor apartment.
